Becky Baker Obituary

Becky Jane Baker, born Becky Jane Harkins, died peacefully in San Antonio, Texas on Tuesday, December 15 at the age of 70. She was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2019.

Becky is celebrated by her husband Ken; her daughter Shannon, son-in-law Jonas, and grandchildren Max and Zach; her son Trent, daughter-in-law Kate, and grandchildren Luke and Rye; her brothers Clint and Lee; stepdaughter Kimberly; and many other loving family and friends.

Becky was born on June 21, 1950 in Braddock, Pennsylvania to Harry and Alberta Harkins and grew up in Pitcairn and Monroeville, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Gateway High School in 1968, received a degree in Education from Findlay College in 1972, and she later earned a Master's in Educational Leadership from Stephen F. Austin University. She lived in Humble, Texas where she taught as a classroom teacher before serving as a Vice Principal and then Principal of Humble Elementary School.

After retiring, Becky and Ken lived in Alto, New Mexico, then Green Valley, Arizona, and finally in San Antonio, Texas. They made many friends over the years who brought joy and laughter to their lives, and they frequently visited and hosted their children and grandchildren, always encouraging a love of books, sports, and the great outdoors. Throughout her retirement, Becky continued to advocate for education by assisting libraries and fundraising for scholarship opportunities; she also volunteered at Ooh La La Designer Consignor, a nonprofit in Amado, AZ. Becky and Ken also nurtured a shared sense of adventure by traveling often, including visits to National Parks and family reunions in Florida.

A service in honor of Becky's life will be held at Sunset Memorial Park in San Antonio. To ensure health and safety, the service will be private and attended in person by immediate family only. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to one of the organizations with which Becky was closely involved: Friends of the Ruidoso Library: 107 Kansas City Road, Ruidoso, NM, 88345; or Friends of Madera Canyon, Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 1203, Green Valley, AZ 85622-1203.

I worked with Becky when I taught at Humble Elementary back in the 90´s. She was more than an AP/Principal, she and I were great friends! I lost touch with her after she retired, but, I never stopped thinking of her and the laughs we had together! I just found this obit and wanted Ken and her family to know how very much she touched my life and those that worked with her at Humble El! I still miss her!

I first met Becky on the tennis courts at Alto. We became friends and one fond memory is of our short-lived movie night get-together. Becky picked an Italian film, can’t recall the title. But the discussion that followed the viewing still provokes smile in remembering. I missed them when they moved to Arizona and we lost touch. I’m so very sorry for your loss, Ken.

Becky and I became quick and lasting friends when my husband Ron and I moved to Alto Lakes Golf and Country Club in 2007. We had a large group of friends and socialized often celebrating birthdays and friendships, golfing, playing Mahjongg and Mexican Train. We were active in the community - created fabulous parties while raising money for the Alto Lakes Scholarship Fund, volunteered as ushers for the Spencer Theater, served together on the Ruidoso Friends of the Library Board and were Ruidoso Valley Greeters. We remained close even after she and Ken moved to Green Valley, AZ. Becky's passing leaves a huge hole in our hearts. Our sincere condolences to you Ken, Shannon and your family and Trent, Kate and your boys. Becky was a fabulous friend.

Such a huge heart and always willing to make a new friend. We were neighbors on Del Monte in Alto and had many great talks in our porch swing and dancing on the table at Obregon’s of course with at least a sip of wine. She will be missed.

Becky Baker was a joy to our Spencer Volunteer Usher Family. She and Ken were generous with their time and talent. They were always available even on short notices. We will miss Becky, always.
