Herbert Kemp Obituary

Herbert Lee Kemp, 76, of Kingwood, Texas peacefully passed away in his home, on March 16, 2016, surrounded by his family. He was born April 11, 1939 in Fort Worth, Texas to parents, James Clyde Kemp and Mary Jean Logan. While growing up he had a very close relationship with his grandfather, Pete Logan, who was the primary influence on his life.

After graduating high school, Herb joined the Air Force. It was during this time, while visiting family in Houston, that he met the love of his life, Penny Darnell White. They were married, March 19, 1962. Upon being discharged from the service, he and Penny moved to Houston where they would live and raise their family. In 1966, Herb graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in accounting. He started his career with Arthur Young & Co. and while there became a Certified Public Accountant. After some years, he left Arthur Young to become a financial officer for an oil and gas company.

Herb loved the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed fishing in both fresh and salt water. He also spent a lot of time puttering in his yard and walking his dogs.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jim Kemp. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Penny, his daughter, Brandi Horton and her husband, David, his granddaughter, Ashley Horton and his grandson, Michael Horton.

Herb's wisdom, wit, and sense of humor will be greatly missed by all who knew him. His high school motto was, "Never forget where you came from." Herb never forgot. He was always a good old boy from Fort Worth. A graveside memorial service will be held at Houston National Cemetery, on Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, his family asks that donations be made in his name to Hospice Compassus, 1770 St James Place, Suite 330, Houston, Texas 77056.
