ALTIZER, Robert "Bob" Kolmer
Robert "Bob" Kolmer Altizer died March 1, 2015. In life, he was always loyal to Virginia Tech, his friends, his church and his family. Born in Christiansburg, Virginia, to Virginia and Robert Lee Altizer, Bob was a most proud 1956 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and for the rest of his life, a true Hokie! He enlisted as an infantryman in the United States Army. After his service years he began teaching high school in North Carolina where he married Paula Divine Altizer. He moved to Boca Raton in 1961 to prepare students at J.C. Mitchell to become the first graduating class at newly built Boca Raton High School. There he taught sciences until 1971. After earning a masters degree at FAU and additional science education studies at Bowdoin College, Georgia Southern University and Mississippi State University, he enrolled for doctoral studies at the University of Virginia. In 1973 he returned to Boca to work in Palm Beach County's schools until his retirement. On Saturday mornings of many years, he enjoyed being in a group of local educators who were the first foursomes off the tees at either the old Southern Manor or Boca Municipal golf courses. Every Sunday morning he worshipped at Connected Life Church. And on week day mornings of his retirement, he traded stories with Charlie and the girls at McDonalds. Every year he looked forward to, talked about, and then enjoyed trips to Virginia to hunt and fish with his dearest and truest friend, Wayne Williams of Bath County. A special delight was getting together with former students to recall the "early days" of Boca Raton and conversations with anybody. He is survived by his wife of 56 years; children: Kathleen Meyer and Virginia Eliza "Beth" Fleming and John Divine Altizer; his sons-in-law: Scott Meyer, MD and Jack Fleming; and his treasured grandchildren: Kathleen Fleming, Allison Fleming and John Thomas Fleming who adored their "Bopa". There will be a memorial service at Via Mizner Golf & Country Club on March 8 at 4PM. Gifts may be made to Connected Life Church, 2500 NW 5th Avenue, Boca Raton, FL 33431.

He was one of the "GOOD ONES!" You never knew what to expect in his class. Never a dull moment. He actually made science fun! He and my father used to play golf together. He'll be greatly missed.

My brother and I had Bob for a teacher for two years...Science and Earth Science. He had a passion for teaching as did his wife Paula. My brother had Paula for a forth grade teacher. We later became backyard neighbors. RIP Bob...You will be missed. Prayers for the family. 1970 BRHS

I had Mr. Altizer for Science the year my father passed away. I clearly remember him being so kind to me when he learned that I had lost my dad. My condolences to his family. He was a wonderful man!

Mr. Altizer was an awesome teacher...I remember him so well when I was at Boca High in 1962-67. He tutored me in algebra in my freshman year...always had a kind smie & gente way about him. I'm sure all of us who were privledged to know him, have him as a teacher will remember him with great memories. My condolances to his family...May he rest in

A fine man, who will be truly missed. An awesome father, husband, friend and teacher. I remember him fondly, going back to when his son and I were in day care together. He could always make me laugh. Seeing him in the halls of Boca Middle, made you smile, regardless of how you felt. The endless humor he and my father shared. The many years of friendship he gave to my parents and my family. Loved going to visit him and his loved ones, his heart and home were always warm and welcoming. We have a lost a great one, but I feel blessed to know, he is one of the angels watching over all of us. RIP Mr. Altizer.
