John Wheatman Obituary

John Wheatman

"It's not what you have. It's what you do with what
you have that counts." —

John 'Jack' Wheatman, acclaimed San Francisco interior designer and treasure, passed away on the morning of September 26, 2020. He lived 94 remarkable years, gracing his family, friends, clients, and their homes with his generous spirit, and leaving a design legacy that will inspire generations to come.

A native of Seattle, John was widely recognized as the creator of SF Bay Area style in interior design. Named one of House Beautiful's Top American Designers, John owned his firm and showroom on Union Street for nearly 35 years. He also taught interior design for over 40 years at Mills College and UC Berkeley in California, and the Inchbald School of Design in London.

John's practice always had a practical approach to sustainability. He believed in bringing the outside in and had a keen respect for nature and its ability to bring joy, healing and beauty into everyday life. He grew up in a family that told stories around the fireplace adorned by masses of flowers from the garden, freshly laid eggs piled in a handwoven basket on the kitchen counter. "I love that kind of attention to the smallest detail," he often said. For him, celebrating the cycle of life meant reusing and re-envisioning, not throwing away.

There was never any question that design was his life purpose. "I was in art school before I was five years old," he shared in a past interview. "Even in the Army, I did the landscaping for the Battalion area in Seoul, Korea. We used parachutes for tablecloths."

John began working after graduating in architecture and interior design at the University of Washington in 1951. While design was his passion, it was the people he touched that really mattered. He lived to help people create beautiful spaces that reflect who they are as individuals.

Never about trends, his interiors transformed homes into a true reflection of his clients, capturing their unique spirit, travels, and treasures—what he often called the 'soul factor' of a home. His design philosophy led to something of a Wheatman mantra: A good house is never done. He wrote a popular book by that title, and another called "Meditations on Design: Reinventing Your Home with Style and Simplicity," published in 2000.

"People bring a room to life. My role is to craft the setting, emphasizing simplicity to accentuate the most important part of a home—its inhabitants."

After 45 years in business, John closed up shop at 1933 Union Street. Yet even at 84, slowing down had no place in the lexicon of this prominent San Francisco designer. He went on to oversee projects around the Bay Area—a true testament to the importance of doing what you love in life.

John was predeceased by his wife, Mary. He is survived by adoring nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly. "We all loved Uncle Jack's stories. As kids, we were mesmerized," shared his niece Suzanne. "Everything in his home had a story behind it. He was so engaging we didn't realize we were being taught. Don't we wish all our teachers had that gift?"

John's garden brought him joy every day of his life, and even more so in his final years. If you'd like to make a donation in John's memory, please support the San Francisco Parks Alliance.

Evoking his favorite saying, nothing would make John happier than a "hot damn!" gathering of all who knew and loved him. A celebration of his life will be held as soon as large gatherings are deemed safe.

I was so inspired by John´s book A Good House is Never Done that I wanted to take a class at UC Extension and found this obituary. I will work with this book to enhance my 65 year old kitchen. I appreciate the focus in sustainability, and I will try and get a formica cover for my 60 year old Australia maple dining table that shows some wear and tear. and i will add a cot on the porch. Thanks John for all the inspiration

John Wheatman -- the consummate gentleman and designer. His legacy will be timeless, just as has always been the case with his creations. Several quotations will long remain: "every palacio has its cracks; if you choose to do it, don't hesitate to make a forceful statement; and if it is worth doing, it is worth repeating." Rest in peace, John. God Bless!

Words that describe John Wheatman : kind, humorous, gifted, energetic, authentic, enthusiastic, visionary, balm for the soul. We met John 45 years ago through his class offerings at UC Extension, which began our awareness of his talent and vision. We think of him daily, with the gift of his visionary guidance surrounding us at home.

I have lived for over forty years in the beauty and serenity of John’s aesthetic. He opened my eyes in my twenties when I first walked by his Union Street showroom. That was it! We’ve known such joy from his design!

What a perfect soul! John added life to several of our homes as recently as three years ago. He gave us values and perspectives, personal and other that we had never thought of. He changed our view on "Things" and we will greatly miss him. A pure Legend. Rest In Peace John, until next time.

Working with John was an honor, for over 25 years we helped realize his designs. He was a mentor and influencers for my own design business. He surrounded himself with the most talented interior designers in the Bay Area. He will be missed.

John was introduced to us by our dear friends, Molly and Steve. Their home was so beautiful and we wanted to accomplish the same sense of beauty. Every day we walk through our home and acknowledge all that John did. He designed just about every corner and helped us with our room addition. He was a treasure and will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace.

In 1969 my first date with the person who became my wife was at John's shop on Union Street followed by lunch across the street at Perry's. Since then the Wheatman design philosophy and practical approach has been around me. John and his staff helped my late wife and me first in a little cottage in Portola Valley and then again in Woodside. His last design on our behalf was in my current residence in Menlo Park. For the Menlo Park tpwnhouse, we basically dog-eared multiple pages of his first book and replicated them. It has Wheatman bronze walls, floating shelves, matchstick shades, sliding barn doors, dramatic unobtrusive lighting, and "All Over Knots" rug. It was a privilege to have known John and to live in the beauty and simplicity he created. Rest in peace, old friend.

He made our life more beautiful. I remembered when he did my parents home in the 1970s and then he did ours 30 years later. Unforgettable. He was as gracious and elegant as his designs. It was a thrill when he ordered a slew of my small baskets for the showroom. Hot Damn indeed.

He was a remarkable man in that he brought families joy in the home they already lived in with all their "things" thoughtfully arranged. His breadth was unique in that he visited homes of the very wealthy in San Francisco and made huge improvements in lesser homes in Los Trancos Woods (Portola Valley) that had been built as vacation cabins prior to 1940! He was at ease with every project and every person. Love.

My parents lived in the same building as John and Mary. When they passed many years ago, John was so thoughtful and compassionate to all of us. Throughout my 50 years in Interior Design, John set the bar high to follow in regards to his way of listening and being with his clients. I can already imagine that you're loving designing heaven, John! Namaste, Carla

John Wheatman was one of a kind, the likes of which one rarely comes across and I had the privilege to work with him and his colleagues to supply wool carpets for his clients.
A wonderful gentleman in every sense of the word!

John was a treasure. As an artist he was able to transform interior spaces into contemplative refuges. It was never about being showy or celebrating himself. My wife and I had the privilege of letting John transform our home. Our lives are better for it - "Hot damn!"

John was a wonderful person who I've known since I was a young lad when John was an integral part of my families' furniture business in Oakland early in his career. Oh so smooth and sophisticated with impeccable taste. John and Mary will always have a place in my heart.

What a delightful person! He would remember your apartment before he would remember your name. He was always such a gentleman and loved people and beautiful things. He helped us design two apartments and then helped our sons with each of their first homes.

I remember going through John's store constantly as a young woman living in San Francisco. He so influenced my style. Wonderful memories of talking with John in the store before I could even afford to buy anything.
Rest in Peace.

I did not have the pleasure of meeting Mr. Wheatman but his book Meditations on Design is one of the best interior design books I have ever read. His rooms made a lasting impression on me. In fact, the last photograph in the book, of his SF living room, and how he described his love of that room brought tears to my eyes. He’s left a magnificent body of work. RIP
