Joseph Simini Obituary

Joseph Peter Simini, Ph.D.

Joseph Simini was born in Buffalo, NY, on February 15, 1921, of Italian immigrant parents from the region of Piemonte. He died at age 96 on June 18, 2017, in Concord, CA, with his devoted wife, Margarita, at his side. Joe received degrees in mathematics and accounting from St. Bonaventure College and in business administration from the University of Phoenix. He was a World War Two U.S. Navy ensign; professor of accounting at the University of San Francisco, 1954-79, and co-founder of its faculty union; president of Il Cenacolo Italian Cultural Club, 1979-82; and co-founder and first president of the Piemontesi nel Mondo of Northern California, 1983-90. Prof. Simini was author of a standard accounting textbook translated into various languages, a writer of short stories, poems and a weight-loss manual, and the composer of a song, Let's Keep Christ in Christmas. He was intellectually engaged and socially active until his final illness. Joe was predeceased by two former wives, Maryrose Bellario and Marcelline McDermott. He leaves behind his loving wife, Margarita Quintero, and his son, Paul G. Simini of Buffalo, NY. In addition, he was particularly close to his godson, Peter Catalli; his colleague at USF, Prof. Emeritus Michael Lehman; and his good friend and paisan Andy Canepa. Joe's express desire was to be alive and present at his own "memorial service," which was his well-attended 95th birthday celebration at the Fratellanza Club of Oakland on February 14, 2016. A private inurnment will take place at the Italian Cemetery in Colma, CA. Arvedse, bel fieul!

Joe,
You always preached to me "to get my ticket". Well I got it with your help and counsel. You were one of a kind!

Joe was a legend at USF and is always missed by former USF students and the regulars at Creightons coffee shop who haven't seen him since his latest marriage. He was a good friend to my father Frank Garvey. I always enjoyed speaking with Joe who was a great resource for institutional history and information.
