Ruth Wadlin Obituary

Ruth Feldman Schwartz Wadlin May 5, 1924 - May 5, 2015 SOUTH BEND - Ruth Feldman Schwartz Wadlin, a resident of Stockton Springs, ME, for the last 25 years, died early in the morning on her 91st birthday, May 5, 2015. A woman of wide interests and activities, Mrs. Wadlin was a member of the Maine Historical Society, the Sandy Point Congregational Church of Stockton Springs, and the 1st Congregational Church of Searsport, ME. She also was active in the American Association of University Women and the League of Women Voters. In recent years, she was an active student at the Senior College at Belfast, ME, where she studied subjects ranging from national security problems to the music of the Beach Boys. She was a lover of music, and was also passionate about University of Maine hockey. While health issues limited her mobility in recent years, Mrs. Wadlin loved domestic and international travel. Before moving to Maine, she was active in the Girls Club of Maplewood, NJ, and was a Campfire Girls and a Girl Scout leader. Mrs. Wadlin was born at home in Auburn, IN, on May 5, 1924, the oldest daughter of Earl and Pauline Feldman. Because of her father's job as a civil engineer, Mrs. Wadlin moved frequently around Indiana during her childhood. After graduating from West Orange High School in West Orange, NJ, Mrs. Wadlin attended Upsala College for two years. In 1943, she entered a special drafting program run by Curtis-Wright at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, where she helped design airplanes. She met her first husband, Richard F. Schwartz, while participating in the program. After starting a family with her husband, Mrs. Wadlin finished her college education at University of Pennsylvania, earning an associate degree in 1960, and completing her BA with a major in philosophy in 1966. Aside from her family obligations, Mrs. Wadlin also assisted her husband's writing of "The Eavesdroppers," an examination of the technical, legal and ethical questions involved in electronic surveillance. In 1978, Mrs. Wadlin married the late George K. Wadlin. They lived for eight years together in Norwalk, CT, before moving to Maine. Mrs. Wadlin is predeceased by her three sisters, her husband, George K. Wadlin (d. 1991), her son, Fritz Schwartz (d. 1995), and her grandson, Andrew Mortimer (d. 1989). She is survived by her children, Kate Mortimer, Stuart Holland (Doug Federhart), Eric Schwartz (Margaret Yaukey), and Frieda Cialek. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Andrew Cialek, John Cialek and Chris Mortimer; and 10 nieces and nephews. A reception to celebrate her life will be held with the Rev. Ruth Martin presiding on Monday, June 15, at 11 a.m., at the Sandy Point Congregational Church, Route 1, Stockton Springs, ME 04981. A luncheon will follow. Burial will be at the Riverview Cemetery, South Bend, IN. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Stockton Springs Community Library, PO Box 293, Stockton Springs, ME 04981.
