Alison Hayley Hughes was born November 22, 1987 in Dover, Massachusetts. She passed away peacefully September 14, 2023 in Essex, CT with her loving family by her side. Her friends and family will miss her compassionate spirit and quick wit.
Alison was a gifted equestrian who began riding at the age of three. An avid competitor, she captured many State, New England, and National awards in the Hunter, Jumpers, and Equitation. She was often called the "Horse Whisperer" as her passion and talent for training young horses and fixing the difficult or "broken" ones was remarkable. While the competition world was her life, she always put her love of the horses above any ribbons or titles. The saddle was where Ali was most at home.
Following in her late brother's footsteps, Alison spent many years in the boating industry. This was a career she found true fulfillment in as she could showcase her strengths and always be available for her son. She cared deeply for her coworkers, helping them out and baking goodies for them on a regular basis.
She is survived by her parents Ronald and Wendy Hughes of Essex,CT and her sister and brother in law Lindsay and Daniel Armstrong of Haddam, CT. She leaves behind her beloved son, Miles Mead, of Killingworth, CT, whom she called her "angel" from birth. Her son meant everything to her - she loved watching his soccer and basketball games, walking with him at Hammonasset State Park (a favorite of theirs), and taking him out for special dinners on a regular basis. Ali's love for Miles was exceptional, and she will carry him in her heart until they meet again. Her three nieces and nephews, William, Edith, and Harriet Armstrong of Haddam, CT, will miss her kindness and humor; she always went out of her way to shower them with the love and attention that only an aunt can.
She is predeceased by her brother and best friend, Ronald L. Hughes III. We know in our hearts that they are now together on a boat in the clouds watching over us all, fishing poles in hand, dog by their sides.
Alison especially loved her two Jack Russell Terriers, Carlie and Louis. She leaves her new side-kick, Ace, behind. Over the years, she rescued many homeless cats, dogs, horses, and even rabbits as the thought of animals suffering was unacceptable to her.
A private Celebration of Life will take place in her favorite park with her family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your favorite animal rescue in the spirit of Alison.

Alison loved animals and was a very gifted rider. I first met her as a little girl when she brought her pony, Mini Marshmallow, to stay with us, where she started my daughter's riding career by sharing her pony. Her mom, my dear friend, gave my daughter Ali's beautiful outgrown riding outfits. I will miss her special way with animals and my kids <3

We remember fondly, many happy memories of family gatherings with the 13 Hughes cousins. Ali's smile was infectious and we shared many fun moments together whether it was in Maine, Massachusetts, or Connecticut.

We are heart sick for the whole family, and hope that peace and calm will come in time from the wonderful memories, her amazing legacy in her son, and the positive thoughts of Ali in heaven surrounded by love of family that went before her. Much Love, Aunt Laura and Uncle Scott

Alison was very special to us, we loved her dearly, and we were honored to be her Godparents. Ali was always happy to see us the many times we visited them in Connecticut and when they visited us on the Cape. She always made us Ethel´s delicious cheesecake and chocolate chip cookies and greeted us with a giant smile and hugs.

She loved all animals; particularly dogs, cats, and horses. Ali was an excellent rider and we so enjoyed seeing her compete! We will always remember her teaching us how to feed the horses peppermints and watching her wash and groom her horse after each competition.

Alison also had a big heart for cats needing a home. Two of our ten kitties from over the years were cats rescued by Ali and re-homed with us including our current kitty Marley. She could not keep Marley because of a genetic deficiency that caused him to have fragile skin so he could not live or play with other pets.

Our hearts and prayers for healing go out to the Hughes family in the loss of their beloved Alison. We were brought together through the shared grief of Ronnie and Dana´s passage to heaven and are blessed to call them family. Alison was such a compassionate and witty soul and, after meeting her, understand why Ronnie always spoke of her with such love. May you fly high you beautiful bird and find peace and joy where we know we will meet again.
