Amonte Savion Copeland, affectionately known as Monte or Wale', was born on March 25, 1999, in Portsmouth, VA, to Kevin D. Thomas and Angela C. Lewis. On June 19, 2025, Monte was tragically taken away from us at the young age of 26.
Amonte is a graduate of Manor High School in Portsmouth, VA, class of 2018. While attending Manor, Amonte was actively involved in sports, showing a great passion for football. It was his #1 sport. After graduating from high school, Amonte earned a full scholarship in football at St. Augustine's University in Raleigh, North Carolina. He also pursued other dreams. He later became a certified merchant Seaman and also obtained his Commercial Driver's License for truck driving. Amonte had dreams of buying his own Box Truck, opening a car wash, being self-employed, and becoming an entrepreneur.
Amonte loved being around his family and friends. He was always a happy kid growing up and kept that same personality growing into a young adult. He still enjoyed sports and was a huge Atlanta Falcons fan. He was very active with the younger children in his family. They looked up to him. He was a great role model. He loved good food, and his favorite food was popcorn chicken and fries. He loved music, dressing, fight nights, traveling, and hanging out with his friends. He was "The Man with a lot of Plans."
Amonte is predeceased in death by his father, Derrick E. Lewis, his brother, Derrick Gregory, grandfathers, Linwood Williams and Franklin D. Basnight. He leaves to mourn his parents, Angela C. Lewis and Kevin D. Thomas, stepmother Tawanda Thomas, sisters; Dashaniek Copeland, Desharra Copeland, Kanier Shorter, La Quinta Johnson, Dershonna Gregory, Jekayla Munford and TaShawna Parker, brothers; Kevin Thomas, Demario Munford, Trayvon Swain, TyQuan Elliot, Tre'quan and Dre'quan Speller and Taiwan Parker, maternal grandparents Celestina Copeland and William Lewis, paternal grandparents Beverly & William McKinney, and Joyce Anderson, two special Mother figures; J'nele Shorter and Corteya Banks, aunts; Lakeshia Clark, Tamesha Copeland, Shantae Copeland, and Alecia Thomas-Halison, uncles; Antron Mckinney, Orlin McKinney, and Demetrius Reeder. He also leaves to cherish his memory a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends.
Amonte's favorite saying was "FASHIR" (for sure), meaning definitely. He was a man of his word. Amonte was a young king who was truly loved by all who knew him, and he will surely be missed forever in our hearts.
