Carrie Cureton Stringer, 54, passed away on February 7, 2025, after an extended battle against early-onset frontotemporal dementia.
Born in Greenville, SC, she was the wife of Tommy Stringer, mother to Montgomery Stringer, daughter of Hugh and Rosemary Cureton, sister of David Cureton, and niece of John and Mary Schneider. She is preceded in death by her son, Max Stringer.
Carrie graduated summa cum laude from Furman University, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Senior Order academic honor societies. She went on to earn her Master of Library Science from the University of South Carolina.
Carrie taught English at Blue Ridge High School for several years before becoming the school's librarian. She continued sharing her literary interests as the librarian at First Presbyterian Academy in Greenville. Among her favorite works were the romance novels of Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte, the short stories of Flannery O'Connor, and J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. She was a stickler for the Oxford comma.
Carrie was a fastidious baker whose chocolate chip cookies, lemon pound cakes, and derby pies never failed to please. She enjoyed fast walking Furman's 5k course almost as much as the beaches of Seabrook Island.
The family would like to give special thanks to the memory care staff at The Pearl at Five Forks for their extended and attentive care.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 12, 2025 from 11:30 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. from at First Presbyterian Church a service to celebrate Carrie's life will follow at 1:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. The burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions on behalf of Carrie may be sent to South Carolina Alzheimer's Association at 123 West Antrim Drive, Greenville, SC 29607 or the Bleeding Disorders Association of South Carolina at 25 Woods Lake Road #300, Greenville, SC, 29607.
