Cynthia Jennings Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cornell Memorial Funeral Home on Aug. 19, 2025.

Publish in a newspaper

Cynthia was born in Pownal, Vermont to Joseph Mason Proud and Bertha Day Proud. After earning her bachelor's degree in mathematics from Middlebury College, Cynthia became a teaching assistant at Wesleyan University where she met her husband of 59 years, Peter Jennings.

Cynthia and Peter moved to Danbury, Connecticut where they raised their three children, Eleanor, Barbara, and Peter Jr in the house they built. Together, they ran the Peter Jennings Chemical Company and were active members of the community and especially the Newtown Kennel Club. Cynthia and Peter raised champion Irish Setters.

Cynthia and Peter retired to Delanson, NY in 1987 from where they traveled extensively, hosted friends and family with love and joy, and enjoyed their beautiful home and property. When visiting Cynthia you could always count on at least a few competitive games of Scrabble, cards, or bocce and a cocktail hour spent relaxing and chatting. Cynthia died there peacefully, as she wanted.

Cynthia was a fantastic mother, the best grandmother and a wonderful friend. Her love will have lasting impacts on her family in her absence and she will be greatly missed.

She is survived by daughter, Eleanor Turke of Kingston, NH, daughter, Barbara Getz of Newaygo, MI and son Peter Jennings Jr and wife Dalia of Danbury, CT. In addition, she is survived by grandchildren, Martha Morrone and husband David, Geoffrey Turke and wife Mary Elizabeth, Margaret Poteet and husband Justin, Jean Talsma and husband Nick, Robert Getz and wife Mariah, Dalia Jennings and Peter Jennings as well as seven great-grandchildren.

Cynthia is also survived by her sister Sally Punches of San Luis Obispo, CA and Peter Proud of San Antonio, FL.

Cynthia's family will receive relatives and friends on Monday August 25th at Cornell Memorial Home from 4 to 6 PM. A funeral service will be celebrated at St. James church the following morning at 11AM. Burial will follow in Wooster Cemetery.
