Daniel J. Freeman, age 69, of Plymouth, passed away from complications following a long battle with multiple sclerosis on Saturday March 25th at Wingate at Silver Lake in Kingston. He was the devoted husband of Laura D. (Kortvelesy) Freeman for 46 years. Loving father of Hilary Donahue and her husband James of South Weymouth. Grandfather of Sophia Donahue, as well as brother of Dr. Richard Freeman and his wife Nancee of Blue Hill ME, and the late John "Jack" Freeman.
Born in Morristown, NJ, on June 5, 1953, son of the late Walter C. Freeman and Margaret A. (Regec) Freeman Hokemeyer, Daniel grew up in Morris Plains NJ and graduated from the Delbarton School, and later from Syracuse University with a Bachelors in Architecture. He went on to practice architecture and project management in CA, PA, CT and MA. Daniel furthered his education at Babson College receiving an MBA cum laude in 1993. As a licensed architect, Daniel was brilliant at his craft, and focused his practice largely around primary, secondary, and higher educational facilities that fostered creativity and collaboration. His forward-thinking design of the Snider Agricultural Arena at Penn State University embraced the surrounding landscape and won multiple awards including the 1985 Architectural Merit Award (AIA, Philadelphia), the 1985 Silver Medal from the AIA Pennsylvania, and a 1986 Citation from Architecture and Urbanism Magazine.
Daniel lived his life to the fullest. He enjoyed deep sea fishing trips with friends, mostly for the cigars. He loved everything Italian and was particularly interested in the Italian Renaissance. Dan had wonderful memories of his semester in Florence, Italy during his education at Syracuse. He was known for his passion for travel, cars, the Red Sox, the Patriots, lakes, parmesan cheese, single malt scotch, and hiking. He climbed Mount Washington three times. The environment was very important to Daniel and he always advocated for recycling and reusing.
A visitation will be held at the Cartmell-Davis Life Celebration Funeral Home, 619 State Rd. Plymouth (Manomet), on Thursday, April 20 from 1pm until 3pm. A celebration of life will follow immediately after.
