Darrell Gene Butner, fondly known to many as "Tex," passed away peacefully on July 15, 2025, in
Jacksonville, North Carolina, at the age of 76. Born on February 27, 1949, in the great state of Texas, Tex lived a life marked by dedication, service, and love for his family and community.
A proud United States Marine, Tex served his country with honor during the Vietnam War, embodying the values and spirit of the Corps throughout his life. After his military service, he remained deeply involved with the Veteran's community, becoming an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars serving as an elected secretary while in Iowa and later on was active in the VFW on Piney Green Rd in Jacksonville. He dedicated much of his time participating in outings for veterans in Iowa, sharing his passions for hunting, fishing, and golf. He was also an avid coon hunter "from back in the day".
Two years ago, Tex moved to Jacksonville to be closer to his beloved granddaughter and her family. Here, he continued his active participation in veteran affairs, ensuring that those who served were celebrated and cared for.
Tex was more than a veteran; he was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose love knew no bounds. He leaves behind his son, Shane Butner and wife Stacey of Iowa and daughther Mariah Van Sickle of Ohio. His legacy is carried on by his cherished grandchildren: James Luke of Iowa, Shaylee Taylor and husband Markus of Jacksonville, Samantha Butner, and Breanna Butner, as well as his great-grandchildren, Markus, Jr. and Michele.
In addition to his family, Tex is survived by many brothers and sisters who will miss him dearly, along with his beloved four-legged companion, "Last baby," Silver, who was his faithful friend to the end.
