It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of David J. Fusco, of North Billerica who peacefully succumbed to a lengthy illness on July 11, 2024, in Burlington, MA surrounded by his family. David was a beloved father, teacher, coach and friend. Born on November 28, 1962, in Norwood, MA. David led a life enriched by family, community, and an undying love for sports. He was known by many names-Bubba, Fusco, Coach, Big Boy, Fuzzy, Fussy, Big Dave, 73-but most proudly, he was Dad.
David's educational journey began at Burlington Public Schools. He further honed his skills and knowledge at New Hampton School where he played football and basketball. He then went on to study Business Management and play football for the Chiefs at Springfield College (Class of '86). David later earned his Master's Degree in Education from American International College. His love for learning and teaching led him to a dedicated career as a History Teacher at Lynn Vocational Technical High School and formerly at Tyngsborogh Middle School, and Nashoba Valley Technical High School, where he also served as Athletic Director. After school he coached the high school golf, baseball, and basketball teams. David also coached his children's youth sports teams as they grew up. David's influence extended far beyond the classroom, as he was a football and softball official at all levels for 35 years.
Prior to his career as a teacher, David's entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly when he became the owner and manager of Mrs. Powell's Bakery alongside his parents Marge and Dick. His dedication to community service and youth development was further exemplified as the President and Founder of Mill City Basketball AAU. He was also a devoted parishioner, attending weekly mass his entire life. David had been an active member of St. Andrew's Church in North Billerica, MA, since 1999, and before that, he served at St. Margaret's Church in Burlington for over 30 years.
David's legacy is marked by his genuine kindness, humor, and unwavering care for others. If you were lucky enough to meet him, you had a friend for life. He had an infectious love for all sports, not just in watching and playing, but in coaching and officiating. His true passion lay in mentoring young adults, guiding them to realize their potential just as he did in his storied career. He would go above and beyond to make a difference in his students and athletes' lives, treating them as if they were his own children. He inspired countless young athletes and students with his guidance and encouragement.
David will be remembered as a fun-loving, gentle giant with an infectious laugh and big heart. He was a role model, great family man, and overall, a good person. Outside of work David enjoyed traveling, going to concerts, catching a sunset and watching sports. Summers were particularly special to David, as he spent them on the cape throughout his entire life, creating lasting memories with his children and family. You could also find him watching the ponies race at the track with his dad. He was happy watching the Celtics, Red Sox and Patriots games. He was also a lover of all animals.
David is survived by his beloved family, including his children, Jesse Fusco and his wife Lauren of Billerica, Spencer Fusco of South Boston, and Christopher Fusco of N. Billerica. He was a cherished grandfather to Kennedy Fusco. David also leaves behind his former wife, Jayne Fusco of Dracut, his loving mother, Margaret Fusco of Burlington, his brother Ronald Fusco and his wife Antonette of Billerica, and his sister Christina Autiello and her husband Anthony of Dracut. He will be deeply missed by his many nieces and nephews, whose lives he touched in countless ways. David was preceded in death by his father, Richard Fusco.
Visiting hours will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., Burlington on Wednesday, July 17 from 4 pm until 7 pm. Funeral from the Sullivan Funeral Home on Thursday, July 18 at 8:45 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Andrew's Church, www.billericacatholic.org, 45 Talbot Ave., Billerica, on Thursday, July 18 at 10 am. Services will conclude with an interment in Pine Haven Cemetery, Burlington.
