David Williams, 85, passed away Friday, February 24th at Beverly Hospital. Born in New York, NY, he was the son of the late Thomas and Nadia (Lungerich) Williams, architect and journalist respectively. He was the beloved husband of Nancy (Davis) Williams for more than thirty years.
Having spent his early childhood in New York City, David's family moved to Washington DC during the years of WW2, where he spent the rest of his childhood attending Sidwell Friends School, and then the Academy of the New Church in Bryn Athyn, PA for his last two years of high school. He received his BS from Dartmouth College, his MS in mathematics from Brandeis University and did additional advanced studies in Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania working at the Foreign Policy Research Institute.
While growing up, David spent summers in Pigeon Cove, participating in sailing races at the Rockport Yacht Club with the family's O-Boat. He taught sailing and hauled fish in Gloucester for summer jobs. In his later college years, he studied sculpture with George Demetrious.
After graduating from college, David spent time traveling in Europe, including a year in Amsterdam, and then served in the Army from 1962 to 1964.
In 1963, in Pennsylvania David married Jane Kintner, mother to Kira Williams Gartner and Michael Williams. After the end of their marriage, David lived in Rockport and subsequently in Monterey, CA and New Orleans, LA, where he married Nancy.
David and Nancy moved to Rockport in 1992, where they lived for many years in Pigeon Cove, moving recently to the center of Rockport.
In addition to his parents, David is predeceased by his brother Daniel. He is survived by his wife, and three children: Michael and wife Genevieve Nixon Williams, Kira and husband Tom Gartner, and Eric Bennett (son of Patricia Bennett) and partner Denise King; six grandchildren; sister Julia Williams Robinson and her four children and grandchild.
