Interment 10 AM Friday, October 10, 2025 at Great Lakes National Cemetery, 4200 Belford Road, Holly, MI 48442.

Doug was born in Adrian, MI on July 19, 1954, son of the late Joyce (Gallippo) Shaw. He was a graduate of Waterford Township High School Class of 1972. Shortly after graduation, Doug answered the call to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served honorably from 1972-1975, always carrying the values of loyalty, duty and integrity throughout his life. On February 22, 1992, Doug married the love of his life, Holly Flanery. Together, they built a beautiful life grounded in love, laughter and shared passions. Doug retired in 2014 after an impressive 32-year career with the Canadian National Railroad, where his dedication and hard work earned the respect of all who worked alongside him. A man of many passions, Doug found great joy in the simple pleasures of life - a peaceful day of fishing, a round of golf, kayaking on calm waters, or watching his favorite teams, the Detroit Lions and Detroit Tigers. He was an avid sports fan, an animal lover and a dedicated wild bird enthusiast who cherished time in nature. But above all, his favorite moments were those spent with Holly, his family and close friends. Doug was a member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Otisville, MI and a proud member of the Clarkston American Legion Chief Pontiac Post #377 and the Clio Eagles F.O.E. #3609, where he enjoyed fellowship and community service. Doug's legacy is one of loyalty, quiet strength, deep love and unwavering dedication - to his country, his work and most of all, to those he loved. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Doug is survived by his loving wife, Holly Nelson; 2 children, Justin (Katie) Nelson and Robert Furgerson; 4 grandchildren, Nicholas Chavers, Savannah (Abe) Powell, Caden Nelson and Nikoli Nelson; 3 siblings, Victoria (Charles) Micovich, Pamela DeForest and Dorothy (Donald) Huddleston; 2 beloved feline companions, Frankie and Tony; 2 brothers-in-law, Robert (Kathie) Flanery and Joel LeMieux; 2 sisters-in-law, Lana LeMieux and Jennifer Flanery; many other loving family members and good friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Joyce Shaw; parents-in-law, Maryann (Roger) LeMieux and William (Jaqueline) Flanery; son, Bryce Nelson; daughter, Ashley Furgerson; 2 brothers-in-law, Roger DeForest and Christian Flanery.
