Ellen Shaffer

Ellen P. (Griffin) Shaffer, 92, of Bolivar, died Friday, April 4, 2025 at Hennis Care Center in Dover. Born December 9, 1932 in Columbus, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Patrick J. and Mary Elizabeth (McEneany) Griffin. Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Roy W. Shafer, brothers and sisters, Mary Ann Griffin, Msgr. Patrick J. Griffin, Anne Louise (Griffin) Peters, Agnes (Griffin) Thompson, Daniel M. Griffin and Margaret E. Rork. She is survived by a son Frank Shaffer, grandson Tony (Jonie) Shaffer and a great grandson Royce Anthony. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and her very good friends. Ellen graduated from St. Mary of the Springs Academy, Columbus, Ohio, in 1950. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree from the College of St. Teresa, Winona, MN and a Masters in Education from Mankato University, Mankato, MN. Ellen was a member of a Franciscan Congregation of Nuns, The Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, Rochester, MN. for nearly 25 years. During that time she was an elementary school administrator for 11 years and also an elementary school teacher in several different locations. These included Ironton and Portsmouth, OH; Rochester, MN; Norfolk, NB; and Chicago, IL. She left the congregation in 1974, worked at Certified Oil Company in Columbus, as a receptionist, and then married the love of her life, Roy Shaffer on April 29, 1978. They spent 35 wonderful years together. She was a member of St. Stephen Church since 1978 and Church of the Holy Trinity, Bolivar, since its formation in 1995, and is now a member of St. Joseph Church in Canton. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, April 9, 2025 from 5 to 7 PM at the Lebold-Smith Funeral Home in Bolivar. Cremation will follow and a Memorial Mass will be held on Monday, April 28, 2025 at 11:00 AM at The Church of the Holy Trinity in Bolivar with Fr.Tomas Carvajaly Basto as celebrant. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery in Canton. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice or the charity of your choice.
