Fred A. Sprado, age 90, passed away surrounded by his loving family on June 20, 2025, at Phelps Hospital in Sleepy Hollow, NY, after a brief illness.
He was born to his late parents, August and Elfrieda (Hartwig) Sprado, on June 8, 1935, in the Bronx, NY. He was the youngest of four siblings. The close-knit family then moved to Pier St. in Yonkers, NY, when Fred was a child. He graduated from Gorton High School in 1953.
In April 1958, he entered the United States Army, serving his country with honor and pride in the Korean Military Advisory Group.
Fred married Geraldine Madden on September 12, 1964, in St. Peter's Church in Yonkers, NY. They were blessed with three children: Valarie, Matthew, and Eileen. He had a long career as a lineman with the phone company, retiring from NYNEX in 1998.
Fred was a generous, kind, and loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He loved to sing, often spontaneously. For all that knew him, Fred's sense of humor was one of his best traits. The chuckle that came before the joke always meant that an original dad joke was coming. Family always came first, and he devoted his life to providing them endless love and support.
Fred was a member of the German American Club in Peekskill, NY, an avid dart player, and a loyal Mets, Giants, and Rangers fan. For the last five years, Fred lived at Atria on the Hudson in Ossining, NY, where he was a member of the Atria Songbirds.
Fred is survived by his three loving children: Valarie Joyce and her husband Raymond, Matthew Sprado and his wife Susan, and Eileen Szysh and her husband Ronald.
He also leaves behind five cherished grandchildren: Brennen, Emma, Allison, Jarett, and Leah; beloved nieces and nephews, as well as many friends and loved ones.
Fred was predeceased by his dear wife Geraldine in 1999, and his three siblings: Elfrieda Schreiner, Hank Sprado, and Karl Sprado, who he now joins in eternal rest.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at Cargain Funeral Home, 418 Route 6 (GPS US-6), Mahopac, NY.
A Mass of Christian burial to honor and celebrate Fred's life will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at St. John the Evangelist Church, 221 East Lake Blvd, Mahopac, NY.
Following Mass, Fred will be escorted to his final resting place and interred in Assumption Cemetery, 1055 Oregon Rd, Cortlandt, NY.
