Herbert Eugene "Gene" Wood

May 30, 1941 ~ October 5, 2025

Herbert Eugene "Gene" Wood, 84, Noblesville, passed away on Sunday, October 5, 2025. He was born in Marion, Indiana, on Friday, May 30, 1941 to Zan and Edna Wood. On August 4, 1989, he married Bernice Gonzalez, and she survives.

Gene graduated from Mississinewa High School and attended Indiana University. He retired from Owens Illinois as a combustion engineer supervisor in Gas City and Huntington, West Virginia. He had two overseas assignments during his career, one in Egypt and one in Hungary. Gene was a proud member of the Gas City Lodge 645 of the Indiana Freemasons for over 50 years, had also been a member of the Moose Lodge and attended First Christian Church of Gas City as a younger man. Golf was more than a hobby-it was a passion, and he had five holes-in-one to prove it. He enjoyed cheering on Notre Dame football and Indiana Fever, and any day was a good day to spend time with family and friends. He loved a good card game, a great story, and a well-timed joke. To celebrate his life, feel free to wear golf attire or something blue-just like the color of his eyes.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice Wood of Noblesville; children, Angie (Don) Thomas, Lisa (Mark) Highbaugh, Lori (Kent) Shields, Lisa (late Guy) McKeon, Chris (Jennifer) Gonzalez; grandchildren, Cody (Sarah) Burtner, Ryan Stout, Zach (Molly) Stout, Cara (Michael) Mobley, Emma (Zach) Blackwell, Sara Highbaugh, Mike Gonzalez, Caroline Gonzalez, Jake Gonzalez, Claire Gonzalez, Nick Gonzalez; great-grandchildren, June Burtner, Jackson Stout, Lincoln Stout, Lily Stout, Mikey Mobley, Merick Mobley, Coltin Mobley, Asher Mobley, Willow Mobley, Quentin Blackwell; first wife, Nancy (late Floyd) Beymer; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Zan and Edna Wood; sister and brother-in-law, Lorraine (Dale) Cragun; great-grandson, Carson Burtner; and nieces, Judy Simpkins and Deletta Cragun.

The family will receive visitors from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral & Cremation Service, Storey Chapel 400 E. Main St., Gas City, IN.

Immediately following the time of visitation, a service to celebrate Gene's life will begin at 6:00 pm with Pastor Mick Simpkins officiating.

Memorial contributions may be directed to First Tee P.O Box 26159, Indianapolis, IN 46226 or Firsttee.org with a local chapter at McCulloch Middle School or Arbor Trace Golf Course.
