Augustus R. Johnson, III, known affectionately as Gus to his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully of natural causes on July 17, 2024, at Cooper Hospital in Camden, NJ. Born on May 29, 1939, in Audubon, NJ, Gus lived a full and vibrant life marked by his dedication to family, his passion for golf, and his remarkable wit.
A proud graduate of Paulsboro High School in 1959, Gus went on to establish a successful career as the owner and operator of ARJ Construction in Grenloch, NJ, since 1972. His work ethic and analytical mind were the cornerstones of his business success, earning him respect and admiration in the community.
Gus's love for golf was legendary. He was a fixture at Pitman Golf Course, where he was the club champion for five decades. His competitive spirit and interesting approach to the game were matched only by his sense of humor, often reminding friends and family, "I am what I am," with a twinkle in his eye. Gus and his late wife, Carol, who predeceased him in 2016, shared a love for travel, frequently visiting South Carolina and Cape Cod, and he cherished his golf trips to Florida with his buddies.
A sports enthusiast, Gus was a lifelong fan of the Eagles and Phillies, and his analytical nature made him a keen observer of the games. He was a regular at Bogeys restaurant at Pitman Golf Course, where he enjoyed Fridays and Sundays with his friends, sharing laughs and stories.
Gus was a family man at heart, tough on the outside but kind and gentle within. He is survived by his sons, Gregg Augustus Johnson, Mark Alexander Johnson, Christopher Michael Johnson, and Christian Johnson; his sister, Dorothy Luteman (brother-in-law Bill); his niece, Courtney Stefano; his nephew, Jamie Luteman; his grandchildren, Mark Johnson, Jr. and Brittany Morgan DeVries; and two great-grandchildren who will carry on his legacy.
His family will remember him as a funny, analytical, and interesting man who lived life to the fullest. Gus's presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire those who knew and loved him. His was a life well-lived, and his memory will be cherished forever.
Viewing for family and friends will be Thursday, July 25, 2024, 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM at Earle Funeral Home, 122 W. Church St., Blackwood, NJ 08012, where a Catholic prayer service will begin at 11:00 AM. Interment will be private.
