Obituary published on Legacy.com by Pierre Funeral Home on Jun. 14, 2025.
It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of H. Brent Symon. Brent, at the age of 56, passed away at his home earlier this week. He was a beloved father, brother, son, uncle, godfather, and spouse, and his loss is deeply felt by all who knew him.
Brent is survived by his two daughters, Olyvia and Sophia Symon and his former spouse of twenty-two years, Laura Symon. He also leaves behind his parents, William and Beverly Symon; his sister, Bonni Spencer and her husband Tim; his brother, Brock Symon and his wife, Amanda, along with many cherished aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Brent will be fondly remembered for his incredibly kind heart. He was the best father to his two girls and rarely told them no. He had an unwavering positive attitude and never had a negative word to say about anyone. A man of deep faith, his family takes great comfort in knowing he is now at rest with his Lord and Savior. His gracious, forgiving, and humble nature touched countless lives.
For nearly 35 years, Brent dedicated himself to teaching at St. Benedict and Cedar Hall elementary schools, where he made a significant impact on generations of students. Beyond the classroom, Brent was actively involved in the Bearcat Bash at Cedar Hall, Riding Hope, participated in mission trips with Salem United Methodist Church and served as a Sunday School teacher. He also shared his passion for sports by watching the Cincinnati Reds and Notre Dame athletics, coaching basketball at St. Ben's and leading the speech team at Cedar Hall.
Brent had a genuine love for the natural world, finding joy in hunting and fishing with his family, gardening, collecting old books and antiques, and generously sharing his knowledge with others. He enjoyed history, visiting museums, genealogy, and decorating graves of family members. He took great pride in establishing the Community Garden at Cedar Hall and his own personal garden, which he lovingly tended each year. His talents also extended to restoring a classic Chevy pickup and meticulously refinishing antique woodwork for the home he built.
An alumnus of Western Kentucky University and Indiana Wesleyan University, Brent was also a proud graduate of St. Bernard Catholic School in Rockport, Indiana, where he spent his childhood. He was active in marching band, basketball, baseball and football at South Spencer High School. Brent was honored with a Teacher of the Year nomination and celebrated as part of the 1983 Indiana State American Legion Baseball Champions.
Let us all remember Brent's example and strive to be humble, kind, gracious, and loving in our interactions with one another, just as he was everyday.
Funeral services for Brent will be held at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at Salem United Methodist Church, Rev. LaMont Bonath officiating. Burial will be held at a later date on the family's private cemetery.
