James Joseph Hahn, age 21, died unexpectedly on June 15, 2023. He is the son of Dr. Robert G. Hahn and Maureen Murphy Hahn. James was living near the University of Delaware campus with his older brother, Padraig. He was majoring in Finance.
James's earlier education was completed at All Saints Catholic School in Elsmere and Delaware Military Academy in Wilmington. James had a deep love for sports and competed in baseball in the Piedmont Cal Ripken League and for their travel teams. As a twelve year old, James had the privilege to travel to Cooperstown, NY and play in the Field of Dreams tournament with his team. James also played baseball as a left fielder for Delaware Military Academy, where he played in the state tournaments both his sophomore and junior years. Unfortunately his senior year was lost to the COVID-19 pandemic. James also played football as a tailback and linebacker for St. Mary of the Assumption, and as a safety for D.M.A., where they also played in the state tournament his junior and senior years.
James's love of sports led to many friendships that continued from 7 years old through his high school and college years. These friends often got together when Philadelphia teams (Phillies, Sixers, Flyers or Eagles) were playing. During these meetings of friends, James's smile and laughter were infectious and he was always there to support his friends and elevate their mood!
In the fall of 2020, James decided to defer his college admission (pandemic year) to pursue training in the Delaware National Guard. James completed his basic training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma City, OK. He continued with personal training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri where he learned to operate heavy equipment for his engineering unit in Newark, DE. James then continued his finance education at University of Delaware, where he was a sophomore. In addition to National Guard duties, during the summers in college, James was a lifeguard for Rehoboth Beach Patrol and North Shores Beach Patrol under Captain Kent Buckson.
Along with both of his parents, James is survived by his sister, Lindsey Hahn (Ryan) of Greenville, DE; his brothers, Padraig Hahn of Newark, DE and Michael Hahn of Greenville, DE; and his maternal grandmother, Maureen Murphy. James was predeceased by his grandfathers, James Murphy and Robert E. Hahn; and his grandmother, Sandra (Sisofo) Hahn. James was also predeceased by his brother, Ian. James's shining light will be missed by all who knew him!
Family and friends are invited to visit on Sunday, June 25th, 2023 from 3PM-6PM at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 26th, 2023 at 10AM at St. Mary of the Assumption. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Hwy, Wilmington, DE 19808.
James was more concerned about the welfare of others so if you would like to honor James, please consider making a donation to the St. Mary of the Assumption Community Outreach Program.

I condole with you Bert, Maureen and your family. Sadly James left our world too soon. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting him, he touched many others in our world. A donation in his name was made to St. Mary of Assumption.
