JAMES MELANCON, JR.

James Melancon, Jr. departed this life at West Jefferson Medical Center on Friday, July 25, 2025, at the age of 62. He was a native of New Orleans, LA and a resident to Harvey, LA. James was a graduate of West Jefferson High School and continued his studies at Louisiana State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering. He also served as a medic in the United States Air Force National Guard for 10 years. After his service, he began his career as an Ammunition Specialist. He later began a 29 year career with the United States Postal Service, retiring in 2020. During this time, he was also an entrepreneur of multiple other businesses. In 1990, James discovered the teaching of The Honorable Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam, and decided to join shortly after, to sharpen his mind, knowledge of self, and knowledge of Allah. It was at this time he was honored with the name of James Muhammad. He studied the teachings closely and used them to lead his family to the best of his ability. He was an avid reader, movie watcher, planner, leader, and an executor. He will be remembered as a coach, a mentor, a student, a teacher, and most importantly as a servant of Allah. Beloved husband of 33 years to Yolanda Melancon (Muhammad). Loving father of Demon, Malik, Nuri and Tajah Melancon, and the late Quilland Johnson. Devoted grandfather of Milaan and Malaiya Melancon. Son of Elizabeth Melancon and the late James Melancon, Sr. Brother of Deborah Melancon-Washington, George (Shelly) Melancon Muhammad, and Jaime Melancon. James is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Relatives and friends of the family, also members of the Nation of Islam are invited to attend the Funeral Service at Davis Mortuary Service, 6820 Westbank Expressway, Marrero, LA on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at 10:00a.m. Visitation will begin at 8:30a.m. until service time at the parlor.
