Memorial services for James Delmer "J.D." Tyrrell will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 13, 2025, at the Carmen Christian Church with Pastor Dennis Hatlestad officiating. Burial will be prior to the service under the direction of Wentworth Mortuary, LLC.
J.D. was born December 13, 1929, at Cherokee, Oklahoma to Hugh Charles and Amelia Amanda Tyrrell. He entered heaven on January 8, 2025, at the age of 95 years.
He attended Cherokee School until the 6th grade when the family of 3 boys and 3 girls moved to the farm 5 miles southeast of Dacoma. He graduated from Dacoma High School in 1948. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was a 21 year veteran retiring in 1969.
While serving in the military, he married Evelyn Ray on March 2, 1951 at Vance Air Force Base Chapel. They were united in marriage for 73 years. To their marriage 5 wonderful children were born: Valorie Bird of Enid, Jim Tyrrell of Oklahoma City, Joan Maly and husband, Mike, of Hennessey, Barbra Davis and husband, Jack, of Burlington, and Kevin Tyrrell of Carmen. J.D. and Evelyn were blessed with 10 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
During his service in the Air Force, he was stationed at Vance Air Base in Enid, Webb Air Base in Big Spring, Texas, The Pentagon in Washington D.C., Mira Loma and March Air Base in Riverside, California, and Goodfellow Air Base in San Angelo, Texas. During this time, he spent 2 tours of duty, one in the Marshall Islands and the other in Udorn, Thailand. He attained the rank of Senior Master Sergeant serving duty with Security Services in Intelligence. He was presented with 10 meritorious service medals.
After retirement, he was employed as the Carmen-Aline Cooperative bookkeeper for 18 years. He served on the Carmen Town Council for 3 years and one year as Mayor. He was baptized and accepted Jesus Christ in the Carmen Christian Church and served as a deacon. He enjoyed the Carmen Senior Citizens (After 55 Club) for 17 years and playing cards with friends for 65 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers and sisters, Leonard Tyrrell, Lucille James, Dorothy Romine, Robert "Bob" Tyrrell, and Doris Romine.
Memorial contributions may be made through the mortuary to the Carmen Christian Church.
