Jean Maurice Marchand, 95, of Longmont, Colorado died peacefully at his home on 11 August 2024. Jean was born in Brooklyn, New York on 12 June 1929 to Rene and Jeanne d'Arc Marchand. Jean's youth was a scene out of "Spanky and Our Gang" or the "Little Rascals," hopping on trolley cars, playing stick ball in the street, picking apples off the neighborhood trees and fruit carts and getting yelled at in Italian or Hebrew.
Jean grew up on Avenue "P" and married the girl down the street (his best friend's sister) Anne Marie Schuck in 1952 right after he graduated from the United States Naval Academy. Jean and Anne had a 22-year career in the United States Air Force as a Mechanical Engineer. Their military service saw them living in Arizona, Morocco, Texas, Ohio, New Mexico and a solo tour to Vietnam. Along the way they had four sons, of which he was proud of three. Jean received his master's degree at Texas A&M and a PhD degree from Arizona State University. Jean retired from the service as a Lt. Colonel.
In 1974 Jean became the Loveland Public Works Director where he worked with the best group of colleagues anyone could ask for. After his cherished career at Loveland, Jean became a professor at Colorado State University School of Industrial Construction Management. Jean retired from CSU when his wife of 40 years, Anne, became ill with cancer.
Jean remarried after Anne's death to fellow Kiwanis colleague, Sally Bacco in 1994. Jean and Sally had a loving, 25-year adventure together traveling to the east coast, Italy, Germany and Ireland. In their later years together, he cared for her before her death in 2019.
Jean is survived by his four sons; Gregory Marchand and wife Carolyn of Louisville, CO., Jean Pierre Marchand and wife Louise of Sarasota, FL., Kenneth Edward Marchand and partner Dewette of Albuquerque, NM., Richard Dennis Marchand and wife Arla of Louisville, CO., three sisters, Louise Magistro of Whorton, NJ, Cecile Lanier of Saddlebrook, AZ., Annette Hastry of Matawan, NJ., two brothers, Thomas Marchand of Thornton, CO., Bob Marchand of White Pine, MI., 17 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
Jean was preceded in death by Anne, Sally and a brother, Paul Marchand of Vancouver, WA.
A Rosary and Celebration of Life will be held at Kibbey-Fishburn Funeral Home in Loveland on Tuesday, 20 August from 3:00-5:00pm.
Funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Boulder at 10:00am on Wednesday, 21 August. The burial will follow the service at 2:00pm and will be at Resthaven Memory Gardens north of Loveland on Wednesday, 21 August.
Memorial contributions can be made to Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School.
