Joel Robert Highfield, 45, of Holly, passed away suddenly on February 20, 2025.
Joel grew up in Holly, went to Holly Area Schools, and also spent many summers with his family at a camp called "Higher Ground at Lake Louise" in Boyne Falls, MI. Joel loved camp and enjoyed his time there with family and friends. Later in life, he volunteered as a counselor and also worked on staff.
He loved spending time with his grandparents, who lived just one block away. He visited them often, many times staying overnight. He loved their homemade breakfasts, especially the grits.
Joel had a giant, kind, caring heart. He was talented and creative; an artist who loved painting, photography, and music. He enjoyed playing the drums. He loved introducing his loved ones to new bands and had an uncanny knack for knowing exactly what they would enjoy. He enjoyed watching insightful documentaries, and absolutely loved comedies.
He loved being an uncle and adored his nieces. He delighted in time spent with them; giving gifts, watching tv and movies, and playing with toys.
He had great empathy for marginalized groups and was devoted to causes like LGBTQ+ rights and Black Lives Matter.
He was deeply committed to his friendships and to Billy, his partner of four years.
He is survived by his parents, Alan and Marilyn, and sister Stacey, all of Holly, brother Josh (Aimee), and nieces Emma and Lilee, of Fenton.
A visitation and funeral service will be held on Tuesday Feb. 25, 2025 at the First Baptist Church of Holly. The visitation will be from 9-11AM with the funeral service starting at 11AM. Burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery. There will be no graveside service, however, those who wish to witness the burial may follow the hearse to the cemetery following the funeral service. Memorial donations can be made to: The Trevor Project or Higher Ground at Lake Louise. www.dryerfuneralhomeholly.com
