John E. Boss, age 88, of Butler, formerly a longtime resident of Towaco, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2024.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, John was raised in Lincoln Park and later Pompton Plains. A proud graduate of St. Anthony's School in Butler and Butler High School, he continued his education at the University of Maine Forestry School.
John's adventurous spirit was evident during his college years when he boarded a bus to Idaho to work for the U.S. Forest Service. He later served his country in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1960 in Germany, followed by two years in the reserves.
In 1965, John married the love of his life, Nona Louise Shaw, after being introduced by friends on Christmas Eve to trim a tree - a moment that blossomed into nearly six decades of love and partnership. Together, they built a home in Towaco, where they lovingly raised two sons.
John had a dry sense of humor and a gift for witty jabs, which he expected in return. His passion for fly fishing was legendary, particularly on the Flatbrook and on trips out west, including a memorable journey to Alaska. As his beloved Nona humorously noted, "He claimed to be a premier fly fisherman at catching stupid trout!"
John dedicated over 42 years to the Center Lumber Co. in Paterson, where he rose to Vice President and Yard Manager. He had a deep knowledge of lumber, excelling in grading, kiln drying, and hardwood purchasing. Upon retiring, he and Nona embarked on cross-country RV adventures, exploring the United States and Canada. Their travels took them to Labrador, Florida, Vermont, Maine, Prince Edward Island, and the Great Lakes, creating cherished memories along the way.
A talented athlete in his youth, John played baseball and ice hockey and was a proud member of the American Legion Baseball League.
John is survived by his devoted wife, Nona; his two loving sons, John Boss and his wife Tracy, and Jim Boss; and his four cherished grandchildren, John, James, Nick and Gracie; as well as his sister, Winifred Hannan. He is also remembered fondly by his extended family and many friends.
John was predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Catherine Boss, and his siblings, Marilyn Johnson and Joan Lange.
John's life was a testament to love, humor, and adventure. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Visitation will be held Friday, December 27th from 4-7 pm at the funeral home. A funeral service will be held Saturday, December 28th at Scanlan's 10AM. Burial will follow at Christ the King Cemetery, Franklin Lakes.
In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory to the American Red Cross would be greatly appreciated by his family.
