John M. Halmi Jr., 87, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2024, at Hackettstown Community Hospital surrounded by his family.
John was born on January 3, 1937, in Palmerton, PA, to the late John M. Halmi Sr. and Helen "Kralik" Halmi. He grew up in Palmerton and lived in Northampton, PA, before settling in Mansfield Township, NJ, in 1966. A proud graduate of the Palmerton High School Class of 1954, John went on to earn degrees in education from East Stroudsburg University.
Before college, John joined the U.S. Army and proudly served his country. He devoted much of his professional life to education, working as a teacher and eventually becoming Assistant Principal at Warren Hills High School before retiring in 1994.
John was deeply committed to his community. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in Washington, NJ, and participated in the NJ Watershed Cleanup. He served on the Board of Education for the Warren Glen Academy and the Warren County Board of Recreation. Passionate about youth development, John coached soccer and little league baseball and also served as an umpire.
In his leisure time, John enjoyed gardening, reading, and golfing. A dedicated Philadelphia Phillies fan, he also had a deep appreciation for WWII history. A beloved father and grandfather, he was always deeply involved and engaged in life with his family.
John is survived by his loving children: Suzanne Halmi (Rocco Esposito), John M. Halmi III, and Jennifer Souls (Douglas). He also leaves behind his sister, Karen Black; three grandchildren, Max, Sofia, and Liliana; a step-grandson, Ryan; and the last in a long line of cats, Willie. He was predeceased by his sister, Annette Wargo.
