Opelousas, LA - A home-going celebration for Mr. John W. Johnson, Jr., 71, will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at St. Mark United Methodist Church (534 S Market Street, Opelousas, LA), with Rev. Junius Egby officiating the service.
A visitation will be observed on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at St. Mark United Methodist Church beginning at 8:30 A.M. until the time of the service.
Interment will follow at Garden of Memory Cemetery (218 Ford Road) in Opelousas, LA.
John W. Johnson was born on September 14, 1953, to the late Celina T. Johnson and John W. Johnson, Sr., in New Orleans, Louisiana.
"Coach" as he was affectionately known by so many, was a native of New Orleans, LA and resident of Opelousas, LA. He departed this life on Friday, February 7, 2025, at Heritage Manor Nursing Home.
John gave his life to Christ at an early age and attended Peck United Methodist Church of New Orleans, LA. He graduated from McDonogh #35 Senior High School. He earned a Bachelors of Arts in Physical Education from Dillard University and a Masters of Education in Physical Education from the University of New Orleans.
Throughout his career in education, John impacted the lives of many students and athletes in football and track and field. He mentored countless individuals, helping them reach their full potential. His dedication to the game of football and commitment to excellence set him apart as a true leader and coach.
John continued this journey until his retirement from the St. Landry Parish School District, where he ultimately served as a high school Athletic Director.
John leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Alice Rocio Johnson; one son, Travis Johnson, Sr. (LaTasha); one daughter, Tiphania Johnson; grandchildren, Tamaria, Travis, Jr., Corey, Cortlon, Saige; three bonus children: Christopher Rocio, Ashley Lewis (Tremaine), Krystal Jean-Batiste; one sister, Jaymetta Leslie; his godmother, Rebecca Cureau; one godchild, Tenisha Slaughter, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and life-long friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Celina T. Johnson, John W. Johnson, Sr. and one brother-in-law, Carmon Leslie.

He always came visit and check on me ,when he would come over for a lesson he was shore to make it fun and would stay and talk and tell me was was going on . one thing i wish we could have did was go fishing like he sayed we would . He was a great man and a better freind that would go out of his way for me and others.
