Cobleskill – John L. Lohret, 90, formerly of High St. and Lincoln Ave., Cobleskill, died Monday, May 26, 2025. Most recently, John lived with his son and daughter-in-law in Niskayuna, NY.
Born January 2, 1935, in Glens Falls, he was the second son of Joseph G. and Gabrielle M. Lohret. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his brother Joseph G. Lohret and sister Mary G. Lohret. His sister Anne Gifford currently lives in Gansevoort, NY.
John received his AAS from SUNY Cobleskill and earned his BS and MS from the University at Albany. He returned to SUNY Cobleskill in 1963 as an accounting professor and assumed the role of department chair in 1967. He started incorporating the use of computers over traditional accounting systems statewide with the help of the Virginia Educations Association Grant. John received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1975 and was inducted into the School of Business Hall of Fame in 2008. He retired in 1996.
He married Margaret "Peg" Lohret on April 28, 1956, at St. Mary's Church in Glens Falls. They raised their family in Cobleskill, where they resided for over 50 years. John was active in various community organizations as an officer and/or director and was frequently recognized for his involvement. He was a long-time member of the Rotary Club of Cobleskill and a communicant of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church since 1963.
John and his best friend Margaret were married for 66 years, until her passing in 2022. His living legacy includes 3 children; Christopher John (Kim) Lohret of Delanson, Timothy Andrew (Stephanie) Lohret of Niskayuna and Susan Elizabeth Lohret of Brewerton; and 5 grandchildren Nicholas John Lohret, Jessica Margaret Lohret, Katherine Elizabeth (Joshua) Collins, Rylie Elizabeth Lohret and Owen Christopher Lohret, to whom he was affectionately known as "Pop".
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Cobleskill on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at 11:00am for family and friends. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill, NY.
Memorial contributions in John's name may be made to SCCAP, 795 E. Main Street, Apt. 5, Cobleskill, NY 12043 or to Catholic Charities of Schoharie County, 1445 State Route 7, Richmondville, NY 12149.
