John Camden Neal, 80, a lifelong Martinsville resident, passed from his earthly life with loved ones by his side on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at Miller's Merry Manor in Mooresville, Indiana. His life began on Friday, October 24, 1941, when he was born to the late Floyd Chester "Curly" and Mildred Irene (Bothwell) Neal. John was born in Martinsville and delivered by his great uncle and namesake, Dr. Camden Bothwell.
Johnny, as he was affectionately known by many, was a graduate of Martinsville High School with the Class of 1960. Following graduation, he served in the Indiana National Guard and attended barber school. In 1961, he opened Neal's Barber Shop in Martinsville, where he worked for the following 23 years. After retiring from barbering, he began working with his brother at Neal & Summers Mortuary. John worked at the funeral home from 1984 until December 2004.
He served as the Washington Township Trustee for 28 years and was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church in Martinsville. He also held memberships in the American Legion Post #230 and the Retired Indiana Public Employees Association.
Some of his favorite past times were traveling, doing yardwork, spending time with his grandchildren, and great grandchildren and pulling pranks anytime he had the opportunity.
He leaves behind his wife, Cathy I. (Gregory) Neal of Martinsville, whom he married May 29, 1964; daughter, Melissa Manley (husband, Scotty) of Martinsville; one brother, Steve Neal (wife, Linda) of Louisville, KY; his beloved grandchildren, Levi Camden Collier, Jordan Collier (wife, Michelle), Seth Collier (wife, Tiffany), Presli Craney (husband, Adam), Oakleigh Butler (husband, Kyle), Delaney, Quincee and Easton Collier and Andrew and Roman Manley and great grandchildren, Kaia, Kenna, Koa, Zane and Zeke Collier, Bauer Saylor, Holland, Lynx and McCoy Craney and Callahan Butler, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Along with his parents, Johnny was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas Eugene Neal.
In honoring his wishes, his earthly remains will be cremated, and his family will have a service celebrating his life at a late date.
