John Paul Powers Jr., of Ocean County, NJ, passed away on December 23, 2024, at the age of 75 after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his loved ones.
John, fondly known as Johnny, JP, Dad, or Grandpa, was born to Mary and John Powers on June 6, 1949. He was raised in Roselle, NJ, and attended St. Joseph's and Roselle Catholic High School. John was a proud graduate of the University of Dayton (Go Flyers!).
John worked as a commercial insurance broker for nearly 30 years, followed by a decade in real estate, with his final working years at HMH Jersey Shore University Medical Center. He was a lifelong member of the Cranford Elks, having served as Exalted Ruler and District Deputy.
John's kindness and generosity of spirit were limitless. He greeted everyone with a smile, quickly turned strangers into friends, and found joy in others' happiness. He was an avid sports fan who cheered on his favorite teams with delight (and frustration-come on, Giants!). He mastered texting and the use of emojis, which he used to provide family members with scores and highlights for their favorite teams and alma maters. He was understated, but you always knew he was thinking of you and sending his love.
John loved wholeheartedly and cherished every moment spent with family and friends. He is deeply missed by his loving wife, Denise; his daughters, Noel Hannon (Ed) and Shannon (Ed Harkey); his grandchildren, Drew and Brooke; his sister, Patricia Taylor; his brother, Bob (Elayne); and a large circle of nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will forever hold his memory close.
A celebration of John's life will be held on Friday, January 10, 2025, at the Elks Lodge in Manasquan, NJ. The service will begin at 11:00 AM, followed by a luncheon to honor and remember the incredible man he was.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in John's memory.
Services are entrusted to Jersey Shore Cremation, 43 Taylor Avenue, Manasquan, NJ.

We were so saddened to hear of the passing of John. The first time we met John, he and Denise would walk almost daily passed our house and would take the time to stop and pet our Golden and we would chat. It was easy to see that he loved animals as well as people! We knew from that first chat we would become friends, sharing recipes and talking about his love of sports! In the days and weeks ahead, may all the wonderful times you've shared together bring you and the family comfort and peace. We will miss John's presence and will think of him often,
Much Love and Prayers,
Vic and Ceil Grablachoff

The very first time I met John was when I went to the real estate office for an interview. John was at the office and spoke with me like he knew me all his life. That was how John would connect with people. He would always find something in common with them. John loved everyone and they loved him. He had a wonderful sense of humor. We will miss you John.
