Joseph Matthew Smith, 46 of Martinsville, passed from this life unexpectedly at 7:49 am on Thursday, January 18th, 2024, at the IU Health Bloomington Hospital. Joe was the youngest of fourteen children born to the late William Everett and Rita Joanne (Arnold) Smith. He was born on Tuesday, July 12th, 1977, in Martinsville, Indiana.
Joe lived his entire life in Morgan County and was a member of the graduating class of 1995 from Martinsville High School. He worked many years as a concrete finisher for various companies prior to his medical disability.
He will be remembered by his family and friends for being a prankster who adored his family, especially his daughter and grandbabies, who also loved music, playing the guitar and the harmonica and singing. He was also known to religiously watch and play Jeopardy, which he was quite good at, do crossword puzzles and prepare some amazing meals.
He is survived by a host of loving family and friends including his wife, Michelle Lynne (Cox) Smith of Martinsville; whom he married on July 25, 2014; daughter, Samantha (husband, Dom Lunsford) Smith of Martinsville; two granddaughters, Emilia and Vanessa Lunsford; step-daughter, Madison Cox of Mooresville; four brothers, William Allen Smith, William Everett Smith Jr., Donald Eugene Catt, and Jimmie Lee Smith; five sisters, Debra Jo Williamson, Carla Sue Niebrugge, Libby JoAnne Lowry, Rebecca Anne Burger and Tracy Lynn Marsh.
Along with his parents, Joe was preceded in death by three brothers, Everett Michael Smith, John Avery Smith and George Arnold Smith and one sister, Cathy Sue King.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Monday, January 22nd, 2024, from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm at Neal & Summers Funeral and Cremation Center in Martinsville. There will be a Celebration of Life Service immediately following the visitation at 7:00 pm at the funeral home and he will be cremated following the service.
