Kathi Gabriella Renee' "Kat" Simons, a native of Elkins and a resident of Midlothian, VA, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, June 28, 2024 at her home. She was born April 29, 1961 at Elkins, a daughter of Georgia Lu Godin Simons of Montrose, and the late William Ray Simons. Also surviving is her half-sister, Benita Kay of North Carolina; two aunts, Gina Simons of Montrose and Wilma Zirkle of Huttonsville; and cousins, Jeanne Rohrbaugh of Huttonsville and Brian Simons and wife Laura of Montrose. Kathi was a 1979 graduate of Elkins High School and a graduate of Davis & Elkins College with a B. S. Degree in Communications. It was during her time at Davis & Elkins that she was introduced to Radio and became a deejay on the college radio station. She continued her career at radio station WDNE in Elkins for several years and the Outer Banks before moving to Virginia, where she continued her career as a midday deejay over the airways of Virginia radio on Richmond's Mix 98.1 for over twenty-five years. During her radio career, some of her shows were simulcasted through many different radio stations in Virginia and Florida. Kat's affection for animals blossomed early on her family's farm. Her dog, Stevie, her bird, Gracie and her cherished cats were testament to her generous spirit. One of Kat's segments on the radio was "Pet of the Day" which helped raise thousands of dollars towards aiding animals. Her work didn't stop with radio, she was a heavily involved member of her community, taking part in helping several charity organizations including Richmond and Hanover ARC, Down Syndrome, Relay for Life, the VA, USO, the Alzheimer's Association, Arthritis Association, SPARC, Faison, Children's Hospital, the READ Center, and the Diabetes Association. She was a member of Elizabeth City, NC Order of the Eastern Star and of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Midlothian, VA.
Graveside services will be held at 3:00 pm Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at Maplewood Cemetery in Elkins with Rev. Bill Riffee officiating. Interment will follow. The family requests flowers be omitted and memorial contributions be made to a local humane society of choice, the National Down Syndrome Society, 1155 15th Street, NW, Suite 540, Washington, DC 200005 or Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Sending my love and condolences for all of Kat's family and friends. She was a lovely lady and I always enjoyed her contagious love of life while listening to her on the radio. All that she did to help our fur babies was unmatched. When you spoke to her she made you feel like you were the most important person in the world and she spoke with such love. I'm praying for comfort and peace for you all. May all the wonderful memories you have bring you peace in the days ahead. With Love, Becky Fitzgerald

We knew Kat's love for animals as both myself and my roommate volunteered for FLAG (For the Love of Animals in Goochland). She was a wonderful, sweet and Animal Angel to all who knew her. We visited often at the station with one of our animals and she was always elated. She was one of the 'good ones' and we will miss her so very much. Richmond and Lite98 will never be the same. The world will never be the same. Love Paula and Louise

When My mom was Pregnet with me Kat was one of the first people to know she was Pregnet with me and over the years my family and I would go up to 98.1 and play Merry Christmas Wherever you are in memory of My Aunt Jenny

Kat was a good friend of mine here in Richmond, VA. We met over 20 years ago when she volunteered to do a TV commercial for our Duck Race benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters. For the past 20 years she never said "no" when I asked her to help promote a fundraiser on air or MC an event for a variety of non-profits helping humans. But of course her love for her fur babies ran deep and wide too. She was an absolute pro in the radio studio and her generous spirit and caring ways will always be remembered. To say that Richmond will never be the same without Kat is an understatement...she was a legend here and was loved by countless friends and listeners!
