Kim Turner Mathis lived with a fire in her soul and a heart big enough to hold the world. In the early morning hours of Tuesday, March 18, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer, she left this world the same way she lived in it – fiercely, selflessly, and surrounded by love.
A proud 1982 graduate of Tuscola High School and Haywood Community College, Kim dedicated her career to caring for others. As the Human Resources and Admissions Coordinator at Maggie Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation, she was the heart of the place, a true who made sure everyone felt like family.
When asked about her hobbies, Kim had one answer: And she meant it. Even during cancer treatments, even on the beach, she was working. But beyond her job, she found joy in the water – whether it was spontaneous road trips to watch the sunrise over the ocean, summers spent at Lake Chatuge with cherished friends, or simply feeling the sand between her toes.
Her love knew no limits and family was the cornerstone of her life. She was lovingly raised by her parents, Joe and Pat Turner, whose memories continued to guide her even after they passed many years ago. Kim was also deeply bonded with her sisters, Mandy Turner and Jenny Turner Cobb (Tracy Cobb) it was a unique bond, like no other. They were not three people, they were as one.
Kim and her longtime companion, Jimmy Crocker, (Haley Johnson and her husband Travis) shared a deep passion for football, spending countless hours cheering on their favorite teams and making memories together through the game they loved. They often traveled with the WCU band as chaperones and last year they went to Ireland. That was just a year ago and Kim never stopped talking about it.
The brightest lights in her life were her daughter, Hanna, and her grandson, Jaxon, who brought her endless joy. She adored her nephews, Joe Cobb (Kennedi), Wade Cobb, and Nathan Scruggs, and cherished the family she was born into as well as the ones she chose – her closest friends, Kathy McMullen Sitton, Deb Lanning West, Melanie Earley Parker, and so many more who became like sisters.
Kim gave her whole heart, never asking for anything in return. She poured herself into volunteering tirelessly for the Tuscola Marching Band, Western Carolina University Marching Band, and any cause that needed a helping hand. If someone needed support, she was there – no hesitation, no questions asked.
To know Kim was to be loved by her. She didn't do anything halfway; she loved deeply, gave generously, and left an unforgettable mark on every life she touched. Though she's gone far too soon, her legacy of kindness, devotion, and unshakable strength will live on in all who were lucky enough to be part of her world.
A memorial service will be held at 4:30PM on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at Elizabeth Chapel United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 2:30-4:30PM prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the V Foundation for Cancer Research, Haywood County ARC, Haywood County Senior Resource Center, or the Tuscola High School Marching Band.
