Larry Michael Ammons, 75, of Old Fort, NC, passed away on July 14, 2024 "perfectly peaceful" surrounded by loved ones at CarePartners Solace Center in Asheville. He was born on July 8, 1949, in Andrews, NC at the home to the late Marvie Dean West and Mitchell Ammons.
Larry was raised in Black Mountain, NC and graduated from Charles D. Owen High School. He also graduated from Appalachian State University with a bachelor's degree in Botany and a Business degree. Larry spent many years in Atlanta, GA working in the restaurant field at Partners, Indigo, and leaves behind many dear friends there. He owned, operated and was a Chef at "Bang" in Little Five Points with his partner of 25 years, the late Richard Medonia. Larry was recognized by the Atlanta Journal Restaurant Association as being instrumental in starting "Farm to Table" using local farms and food sources in the 1980's. His restaurant was also famous for southern brunch of "Bistix and Gravey".
Larry was an avid traveler, and he passed on his advice to family to "Say yes to travel!" and "Always keep your passport current and a bag packed!" He loved his sister, Melanie Reising, and went on several trips with her family. He also loved his sister, Theresa Waldrup, and spent many joyous hours cooking and visiting her. Larry especially loved being "Uncle Larry" to numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and great-great nephews. He loved them all dearly.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Betty Jean Hicks; and dear brother-in-law, Donald Waldrup.
Left to cherish his memory are his sisters, Joyce Ann Runion of Asheville, Theresa Ann Waldrup of Swannanoa, and Melanie Dawn Reising and husband, David Reising Jr. of Broad River; brothers, Bobby Ray Ammons Sr. of Black Mountain, Ralph Ammons of Black Mountain, and Rickey Ray Ammons and wife, Lynn of North Fork.
A family gathering will be announced at a later date.

I was a friend of Larry's many years ago in Atlanta. At the time, he was in a relationship with another friend, Tom Flower. After Tom passed away, I only saw Larry a few times before I moved to DC for 20 years. I thought of Larry so many times and I tried to find him but I was not successful. After retiring in 2021, I moved back to Atlanta and I tried to find Larry for the last four years. I'm heartbroken to learn he passed away last year. All the time that I had been thinking and looking for him, he was still here. Larry was a sweet, kind and compassionate man. I'll never forget him. Please accept my sincere condolences.
