Larry Francis Walters, age 85, of
Marion, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 29, 2024, at Riverside Methodist Hospital.
Born on August 24, 1939, in Marion, Larry was the son of the late Francis 'Fritz' and Artie (Depriest) Walters. He was a proud graduate of Harding High School, class of 1957, where he made his mark as the band's drum major and an accomplished clarinet player. It was during one chilly Friday night at a high school football game, while seeking warmth in the hallway, that fate brought Larry face-to-face with Kay Murphy. After a courtship marked by persistence and affection, they married in 1961 at the Rectory of St. Mary Catholic Church-a union that would endure for over six decades.
Larry's sense of duty led him to enlist in the U.S. Army shortly after his wedding, where he served as a tank operator and gunman during the tense days of the Cuban Missile Crisis. His service to his country was met with honor and pride, and upon his return, Larry embarked on a fulfilling career with The Erie Lackawanna Railway, later transferring to Conrail in Columbus. As a dedicated diesel mechanic, Larry took great pride in ensuring that the engines and cars he worked on were in top condition, demonstrating the same meticulous care in his work that he applied to all aspects of his life.
Those who knew Larry remember him as a sharp dresser with a laid-back demeanor, known for his quick wit and dry sense of humor. His love of simple pleasures was epitomized in his fondness for plain hamburgers-though he was often met with the unwelcome surprise of receiving a cheeseburger. A lifelong fan of Ohio sports, Larry could often be found cheering on The Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Cleveland Browns with unwavering loyalty.
In his free time, Larry's hands were never idle. He was a passionate classic car enthusiast and member of the Marion Fly Wheels. He was a proud owner of a Yellow Chevy II Pro-Street Nova and a 1958 Corvette, whose unmistakable roar could be heard from miles away as he cruised through Marion County. Whether it was meticulously restoring cars or constructing a deck around his pool, Larry's craftsmanship and attention to detail were admired by all.
A man of deep faith, Larry was raised Baptist and later attended St. Mary Catholic Church in Marion, where he found solace and strength. His faith was the foundation of the love and support he offered his family throughout his life.
Larry is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Kay Walters of Marion; his son, Vince Walters, also of Marion; and his beloved grandchildren, Molly (Britney) Walters, Lyndsey (Justin) Erickson, and Eric (Abbey) Walters. His legacy lives on through his great-grandchildren, Draco, Dorian, Eli, Abe, Alex, Emily, Garyson, and Scarlet Walters, who will forever remember his love and guidance. He is also survived by his brother, Phillip (Judy) Walters, sisters-in-law, Carolyn Walters, and many cherished nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his son, Gregory Walters, and his brother, Rick Walters, whose memories will forever be treasured by those left behind.
