Leon was born on October 2,1929 at home in Echola, Alabama to the late Pearl Camp Jones and Floyd Mitchell Jones. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Martha Jean Hester Jones, his son Jeffrey Leon Jones and his siblings Douglas Jones, Mildred Jones Hargrove, and Fred Franklin Jones.
Survivors include his daughter, Karen Jones Caputo (Mike), his two granddaughters Courtney Caputo Pierce (Evan) and Elizabeth Hester Caputo, and his great-grandson Jones Gray Pierce as well as nieces and nephews and many cousins.
Leon was a lifelong resident of Tuscaloosa County growing up in the Samantha community. He graduated from Tuscaloosa County High School in 1948 where he lettered in three sports. He played on the undefeated 1946 Tuscaloosa County High School football team. He attended the University of Alabama for two years before enlisting in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He served four years during the Korean War, with one year served in Korea. Leon re-entered the University of Alabama after his discharge and graduated from the School of Commerce and Business Administration with a degree in accounting in 1956. He worked for the FDIC and retired from Alabama Power Company in 1988 where he worked for 30 years.
During retirement, Leon was an avid golfer and developed numerous friendships at Indian Hills Country Club because of his love for the game. He hit three Hole-in-Ones, his last two coming when he was in his late eighties. He enjoyed his Monday morning coffee group, rarely missing a "meeting." He was a charter member of St. Mark United Methodist Church and a member of the McCollum Sunday School class where he remained as Treasurer for years.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved his two granddaughters and he and Jean enjoyed attending their tennis matches, dance recitals and softball games through the years. He was so proud of his great-grandson and name-sake Jones, always commenting on what a fine boy he was.
Honorary Pallbearers are Norman Carlson, Joe Hargrove, Lynn Higginbotham, Billy Jones, Bobby Jones, Evan Pierce, and members of the McCollum Sunday School class at St. Mark Church.
