Lorelei "Lori" Annette Smelser, 71, of
Greenwood, IN, passed away peacefully at home on June 21, 2025.
She was born on July 31, 1953, in Greenfield, IN, to Kenneth Clark and Norma (Clark) Whitaker.
Lori grew up in Whiteland, IN, and graduated from Whiteland Community High School in 1971. She went on to earn her bachelor's degree from Ball State University and her master's degree in education from Indiana University.
Lori devoted over 30 years to teaching at Center Grove Elementary School, where she touched the lives of countless students and colleagues with her warmth, patience, and passion for learning. She was known for her deep love of children and her gift for helping them grow.
Outside the classroom, Lori enjoyed gardening, painting, reading, and spending time outdoors. She was a member of three book clubs and had a particular love for ballroom dancing. One of her greatest joys was travel, especially cruising, and she had the opportunity to visit more than 50 countries during her lifetime. Lori was also a member of Center Grove Church and Southland Community Church.
Above all, Lori treasured her family. Her greatest joy came from being a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth Clark and Norma (Clark) Whitaker.
Lori is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Robert Lee Smelser. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 14, 2025. She is also survived by their two children, Brent Smelser (Amanda) and Kyle Smelser (Ola); and five beloved grandchildren: Baron (17), Adelyn (14), Andrew (12), Stella (3), and Alexander (2). Lori is also survived by her four siblings: Steve Jones (Linda), Teresa Cook (Dennis), Randy Clark (Shelly), and Kim Tillett (Mick).
A funeral service will be held at Center Grove Church, 2340 S State Rd 135,
Greenwood, IN 46143 on Thursday, June 26, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. Visitation will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with burial to follow at The Gardens at Olive Branch Cemetery and Mausoleum Park,
Greenwood, IN.
Lori's life was one filled with love, laughter, and lasting impact. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
