In Loving Memory: Mark Edward Girardin (1/22/1950 - 1/5/2023)
Mark Edward Girardin, a crazy old hippie whose journey began on January 22, 1950, in
Algonac, MI. He has left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him. Mark's life was a tapestry woven with love, friendship, and unforgettable moments.
During his formative years in
Dearborn, MI, Mark formed enduring friendships, particularly with the Higgins family's Dennis, Jerry and Sue. As a proud member of the Fordson High School swim team, he showcased not only his athletic prowess but also his ability to forge connections that would last a lifetime.
Mark's charisma brought Diana (Buffington) Girardin and himself together. They ventured to Detroit, where they built a life, surrounded by family and friends. Among his close companions were Pat Gagin and Joseph Zupansic, with whom he shared laughter and camaraderie. When he was not at work, for ADT as an alarm technician, he was in his expansive garage in the Warrendale neighborhood in Detroit or tent camping at Crooked Lake in Pinkney. At Crooked Lake campground, his vibrant Volkswagen bus became a canvas for everyone he met. Evenings were marked by encounters with strangers, he'd carry a lantern and they'd call out "Hey Zeke is that you?" They'd both laugh and it would lead to spontaneous parties at the campsite. Mark's spirited nature reached its peak when he trekked up the forested hill, proclaiming, "party on the hill," and, true to form, celebrations ensued.
Proud father of two daughters, Kerry and Casey Girardin, Mark beamed with pride at their accomplishments. The passing of his youngest daughter in 2015 due to cancer left an unfillable void, and he carried her memory with him always. It was a source of pride that his eldest daughter, Kerry Girardin Williams, completed her bachelors and master's degree from the University of Michigan. She continues to teach in the Detroit Public Schools and has two incredible children. Mark's only grandchildren, Rowan (12) and Morgan (10) Williams. He would have liked to see them more.
Following retirement, he returned to the Algonac area, relishing the childhood memories and the majestic sight of big ships passing on the St. Clair River from his window. He enjoyed reminiscing about his brief time on ship as a merchant mariner. Mark's cantankerous demeanor was a testament to his unique character, yet he was surrounded by caring neighbors from the church on one side and Ian Bradley's family on the other, who provided unwavering support until the very end.
Mark, one of the last bearers of the Girardin name, reunites with his loved ones who preceded him in death: his mother, Phyllis (Mason) Girardin, father, Jack Girardin, sister, Kitty Markey, and brothers, Howard, Matthew and Steven Girardin.
Tragically, Mark's journey on earth came to an end on the morning of January 5, 2023, at Blue Water Hospice in Marysville. As we bid him farewell, let us find solace in the belief that Mark is now with his family, gathered at a kick-ass bar, sharing laughter and love for eternity.
May he rest in peace.
