Marshell Kelton Byrd, Jr., 74, of Kingston passed away at Health Alliance Hospital on March 28, 2025. Born November 4, 1950, he was the son of Marshell Kelton, Sr. and Alice Marie (Brown) Byrd.
Marshell served his country in the Navy from 1971-1974. In his civilian life, he worked as a custodian for the Kingston School District. He also worked previously at IBM, Hercules-Dyno Nobel and Green Haven as a correction officer. Marshell loved and lived sports. Football, track and field and baseball were his favorites. While attending Kingston High School he played Varsity football as a starting halfback wearing his famed number 23 jersey. He made all DUSO in 1968 and helped the team to win the league championship. He was a fast sprinter, and quick, agile, and elusive displaying his gifted talents on the gridiron in front of the large crowds that filled Dietz stadium.
Marshell was also very friendly and extremely well known. The NY Giants, Mets, and Knicks were his favorite teams. His home was always adorned with team memorabilia. It was quite the experience to hear him going back and forth jabbing with others about players, stats and all around sports news. Believe me, ESPN analysts and sports casters had nothing on him.
More importantly, he was a loving man and father. He gave with a clean heart always willing to openly share food and drink with neighbors and loved ones. He was also a pretty good cook and baker. He loved making strawberry cheesecake. Loved eating it, too.
Marshell is survived by his son Marshell K. Byrd III., his daughter Marquita Byrd, his significant other Frances "Tweetie" Mandville and his siblings: Dwight Howard Byrd and his wife Peggy, Maureen C. Byrd-Blue and her husband John, Chrystal Y. Byrd, Lynette F. Byrd, Madia R. Brown, Rozelle Q. Magee and her husband Roderick. Grandchildren; Aamoni, Ava, A'ashton, Denise and Dasiah (Twins), Keeley, Jamir, JaKobe, Jabari and his life long loving best friend Bruce Brown.
Marshell is predeceased by his wife Barbara Jean (Quick) Byrd; his parents, Marshell Kelton Sr. and Alice Marie Brown Byrd, and his sisters: Michele R. Byrd and Rhoda Brown and his nephew Alex R. Byrd.
