Mary Lou was born on January 11, 1928, the third of four children born to Will and Helen (Lockwood) Averitt. She grew up on a farm just west of Greenwood on Averitt Road. She was a cradle-roll member of the First Baptist Church of Greenwood. Her home was a log cabin, later modernized and expanded to accommodate the large family. Mary Lou graduated from Whiteland High School and kept in touch with many in her class, helping with class reunions. Her lifes occupation was as a dental assistant for 47 years, working for Doctors Stevenson and Jansen. She enjoyed traveling with her siblings families on several trips, and she loved gathering together with cousins at the family reunions. Mary Lou was a member of Eastern Star and had recently received her pin indicating her 75th anniversary of joining that organization.
Surviving Mary Lou is one sister-in-law, Phoebe Averitt of Hallandale, FL. Her parents and siblings are deceased. Mary Lou never married nor had any children, but she claimed special family connections with her nieces and nephews as follows: David (Lillian) Rea of Orlando, Florida; Donna Walden of Kokomo, IN; Pam (Joe) Anderson of Athens, AL; Philip (Cherie) Averitt of Anderson, IN; and Jeffrey (Rhonda) Averitt of Danville, IN. In addition, Mary Lou is also survived by many great nephews and nieces.
