Our beloved matriarch, Mattie Amos Brewer, age 91, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2025. Born on August 21, 1934, in Uvalde, Texas to her parents Mr. William Amos and Addie Mae Wright. Mattle lived a full and remarkable life rooted in faith, family, and service.
Mattie received her early education at St. Peter Claver Catholic School in
San Antonio, Texas. She went on to become a proud and dedicated bilingual nurse, beginning her career at Baptist Hospital, where she cared for patients with compassion and excellence. Even after her formal retirement, her heart for service never dimmed. She continued her life's calling as an in-home caregiver, offering comfort and love to those in her care. Mattie served as a caregiver for the Hugh Foster family where she doted on their five children (Frank, Gage, Addie, Hugo and Jenny). She loved them as her own children. A grandchild was even named, Brewer, after Mattie and her late husband Rowland.
While living in Boston, Massachusetts, Mattie became an active and beloved member of Union United Methodist Church, where her faith continued to shine brightly. In 1984, she and her husband relocated to Santa Barbara, California, where they joined First United Methodist Church and joyfully sang together in the church choir.
Mattie's commitment to community and social justice was evident throughout her life. She was a proud member of the Santa Barbara and San Antenio branches of the NAACP, as well as the Martin Luther King Committee in Sant Barbara, Through her involvement, she used her voice and her heart to uplift others and slind for equality and compassion.
She found joy in life's simple and grand moments alike; cooking meals that brought family together, decorating for holidays and celebrations, traveling, volunteering in the community, wearing her cherished hats, and spending precious time with loved ones. Her laughter, warmth, and strength will be remembered by all who loved her.
Mattie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Rowland M. Brewer, her parents, and siblings Mary Greene, Theresa Stevens, and Earl Wright, Jr.
She leaves behind her three children from her first marriage to Earl Smith, Cynthia L. Smith White, Pamela V. Smith, and William Howard Smith. She also leaves behind her adopted daughter Diane R. Boggess, god-son Lawrence Jackson Jr. "Sparky" stepchildren Jeanette Walker and Margaret LeMelle, her beloved grandchildren Kevin LeMelle, Danny Walker (Tosha); Jasmon J. Smith, Morjorie M. White, Monica M. White, Prince G. Eshan, and Jacarra A. Eshan, and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, and many special friends.
To her family, Mattie was more than a mother and grandmother; she was a guiding light, a confidante, and the heart of every gathering. She taught us the importance of faith, resilience, love, and laughter. Her legacy lives on in each of us, carried forward in our memories and in the way we love others.
Though we will miss her deeply, we rejoice in knowing she is at peace and resting in God's eternal care. Thanks to all who loved her.
