Mildred M. Scranton, wonderful wife, devoted mother, grandmother and esteemed member of the Brighton community, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 11, 2024. Born on August 5, 1925, in Hartford, MI, Mildred was the beloved daughter of Clare H. Clover and Josie B. Koob.
On November 24, 1950, she exchanged vows with her beloved husband, Robert L. Scranton, in Hartford, MI, marking the beginning of a lifelong partnership filled with 58 years of love until his passing in 2009.
Mildred's faith was a cornerstone of her life, as she dedicated herself to the First Presbyterian Church in Brighton since the early 1950s, where she selflessly taught Sunday school and served on session for many years. Her commitment to service extended beyond the church walls, as she served as a girl scout leader, an Eastern Star life member in Hartford, MI, and a proud member of the History of Women in Brighton, MI, where she celebrated and honored the diverse accomplishments of women in the local community.
Her compassionate spirit shone brightly during her high school years when she knitted socks and sweaters for servicemen with the Red Cross, showcasing her generosity and care for others. Her service to her country continued during WWII, where she served as a Gray Lady in Kalamazoo, MI, and at the veterans hospital in Battle Creek, offering comfort, companionship, and support to soldiers through reading, writing letters, and heartfelt conversations and prayers.
Mildred's professional journey was marked by dedication and excellence, as she worked at Upjohn Company in Kalamazoo, MI, before embarking on a fulfilling career with the Brighton area schools. Over 19 years, she served as executive secretary and office manager to the superintendent, where her hard work and commitment played a vital role in supporting the educational mission of the district.
Her love for her church, family, travel, sports, and reading enriched her life and brought joy to those around her. Her legacy of kindness, service, and dedication will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her family, friends, and community.
Mildred is preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Robert L Scranton, and is survived by her children, Clare A. (Cas) Scranton and Karen L. (Chet) Kierpaul; her grandchildren, Eric Scranton, Aaron Kierpaul, and Kassandra Kierpaul; her sister, Gail Colman as well as several loving nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are encouraged in Mildred's name to the First Presbyterian Church of Brighton, 300 East Grand River Avenue, Brighton, MI 48116. Please see the link located below for online donations.
Visitation will take place from 3:00PM - 8:00PM on Monday, April 15, 2024 at Lynch & Sons, 600 E. Main St., Brighton, MI 48116.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00AM on Tuesday, April 16, 2024 at First Presbyterian Church of Brighton, 300 East Grand River Avenue, Brighton with the Rev. Scott Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in Brighton Hills Cemetery.

Friday bus rides back from Kalamazoo to Hartford with this "looked up to" upper HHS class classmate, started our lifetime friendship. Pleased when she and our Coach Bob Scranton got together. Both missed when they moved to Brighton. Later proud of their accomplishments and honored to be invited to public celebrations thereof. Last meeting a few years back for dinner in Brighton with her arranged for by my son, Ron Ward. She still that sharp gal, both in mind and body. Will miss our phone and other contact. Hope to keep up now with her sister, Gail Colman.
