Dr. Neal F. Aulick II, 55, of Wheeling passed away on May 9, 2024 at Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Glen Dale, WV. Neal was the son of the late Leslie Aulick and Cordelia Vickers Aulick of Burlington, Ky. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Ginger Gosney Aulick, and his daughters, Afton Aulick of Pittsburgh and Harper Aulick of Wheeling. He leaves behind his sister Melissa (Ray) Sterling of Independence, KY, his nephew, Steven Sterling of Washington, PA, and nieces Jordan Sterling of Walton, KY, and Whittney Lindsay of Lakewood, CO and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Neal was born in Covington, KY on July 21,1968. His undergraduate studies from Northern Kentucky University were completed in 1991 where he met his future wife. Neal and Ginger were united in marriage the week following their college graduation by their Biology professor, Dr. Thomas Rambo, who was also an ordained minister. Soon after they moved to Lexington, KY, where Neal attended medical school at the University of Kentucky. He graduated in 1995 and completed his residency at the WVU School of Medicine in Morgantown in 1998. He was a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and completed an administrative fellowship in the Emergency Medicine Physicians Scholars program in 1999.
Neal's medical career was primarily spent as an attending physician for Emergency Medicine Physicians (USACS) in emergency departments throughout West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania, including United Hospital Center in Clarksburg, WV from 1997 to 2005, having served as its director since 1999; Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling, WV and East Ohio Regional Hospital in Martins Ferry, OH (EMSTAR) from 2005 to their closures in 2019, having served as their director since 2007. His final employment was at WVU Medicine Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Glen Dale, WV from 2019-to the present. While there, Neal also became a certified Black Lung Examiner for the Respiratory & Occupational Lung Disease Clinic through the Department of Labor in 2020.
Neal was involved in education, having served as a lecturer and instructor to the OVMC Emergency Medicine Residency Program and Wilderness Medicine Rotation. In addition, he was a clinical assistant professor at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, the Department of Emergency Medicine at West Virginia University, and the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Neal served on numerous committees and boards and held many positions throughout his career, including for West Virginia ACEP and National ACEP.
Neal enjoyed a wide variety of hobbies and interests. He was an avid reader, shared a common love of heavy metal music with his sister Melissa, played guitar for Al Buterol and the Inhalers (a charity cover band of local physicians and healthcare professionals), was a champion Texas Hold'em poker player, appeared in two episodes of Untold Stories of the ER, completed the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati, OH, played racquetball, golf and pickleball, enjoyed deer hunting, and was a business partner for the trucking company 828 Transport, Inc.
Neal had a huge heart, was a great mentor, and loved without limits. Family and friends were everything to him, and he loved nothing more than spending time with all of them. He shared his interests with all who knew him, and actively learned everything he could about the interests and hobbies of his friends and loved ones.
Neal spent the past two years battling colon cancer and amazed everyone with his tenacity, bravery, determination and grit. He was awe-inspiring.
In addition to his family, he cherished the time spent with his dear friends, the Bodkin family, and all of his OVMC/Reynolds co-workers.
In keeping with Neal's wishes, there will be no funeral services. A celebration of life will be held in his memory at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any charity of your choosing. Suggestions include any Black Lung advocacy group, The American Cancer Society, Oglebay Institute's Performing and Visual Arts program, Wheeling Park High School's Speech and Debate Team, and the Autism Self-Advocacy Network.
