Our kind, sweet mom, grandma, great-grandma and friend returned to Heavenly Father on Saturday, March 23, 2024, at the age of 88.
Penny was born Nov. 29, 1935, to Harold Aldo and Elisabeth Penrod Wood in Washington, D.C. She loved dancing, singing and playing sports, especially field hockey. After attending Blair High School she enrolled in at the University of Maryland where she studied health sciences. While she was there, she was invited to a new program at Duke University to study physical therapy.
During her time at the University of Maryland she became acquainted with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After doing her own research (at the Library of Congress), she decided to meet with the missionaries and was baptized a member of the church on August 19, 1956, in Scarsdale, NY, where her family had moved.
She married Michael Margetts on Nov. 15, 1958, in Scarsdale, NY. They moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, shortly after. They had 3 children, Matt, Cathie & Jan. While they lived in downtown Salt Lake, Penny was involved in many social groups, including Daughters of the American Revolution and Ladies of the Guard, and she was very involved with Cub Scouts. She also sang in many events in the Salt Lake community, including a trio that performed at various events in the valley.
Penny held many callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints within the Relief Society, Young Women's, and her favorite, Primary. She loved being the Primary chorister. She was often heard signing Primary songs in her house even recently.
After her divorce in 1980 she pursued her career as a physical therapist and became a crew chief at LDS Hospital for the trauma unit. She retired in 2000 and became a full time grandma.
Grandma Penny loved her 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She attended every singing, dancing and sporting event that any of them participated in. She moved to Las Vegas in September 2000 to enjoy the sunshine and live close to Jan. All the grandchildren loved to visit Grandma Penny and play in her pool. She loved her grandchildren and made them feel that each was her favorite.
Penny is survived by her 3 children, Matt Margetts (Christy), Cathie Beecher (Jeff), Jan Rosenkrantz (Gary) and her grandchildren Dane Margetts (Aubrey), Nicole Burton (Eric), Marcus Beecher (Leslie), Sarah Beck (Tyler), Ali Jones (Harrison), David Beecher (Shelby). Michael Rosenkrantz (Halie), Porter Rosenkrantz (Kenna), Hayden Rosenkrantz (Kacie), Kendall Rosenkrantz (Gwyn) and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents Harold and Elisabeth Wood, her younger brothers Don and Vaughn, and her great grandson Quinn.
We would like to acknowledge Carrington Court Assisted Living, her home for the last 18 months. Thank you for the comfort, care and love she received from both the wonderful staff and residents. Huge shout out to the amazing Activities Director, Diane! Penny especially loved the bus trips, balloon badminton, movies and 3:00 Bingo.
