Philip Terry Garner, a cherished family man and esteemed educator, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2025, in Hopewell Junction, NY. Born on December 27, 1944, in Chicago, IL, Philip's life was marked by a profound dedication to his loved ones and a boundless zest for life.
Philip was the beloved husband of the late Ellen (Nilsen) Garner, who was the love of his life. Together, they built a legacy of love and commitment that continued to flourish through their children, Heather and her husband Edward Schmidt, and Gregory and his wife Heather Garner. The joy of his life was further multiplied by his adored and cherished grandchildren, Harrison, Parker, and Chelsea. He was the son of the late Homer and Ada (Hall) and younger brother to Brian. He was like a brother to his sister-in-law Gail, as he was part of her life from age 15. Philip's extended family is filled with nieces, nephews and cousins across many states that he cared deeply for. He spoke often about the wonderful memories he made with his family while visiting Michigan as a boy. He cherished the bonds and memories they shared.
An alumnus of Ardsley High School and Kent State University in Ohio, Philip dedicated his career and life to the sciences. First, as a Biologist at General Foods, then to enlightening young minds as a Science Teacher with the Carmel Central School District. His passion for education was rivaled only by his love for his family.
Philip's interests painted the picture of a man who embraced life with open arms. An avid boater, he found joy on the waters of the Hudson River and was passionate about protecting it. He also loved being on Candlewood Lake with his family, enjoying swimming and water skiing. Whether at the helm of his powerboat or navigating the sails of his sailboat he was happiest on the water and instilled that same love in his children and grandchildren. His adventurous spirit was also evident in his love for road trips, especially in his treasured 1968 Plymouth Barracuda convertible, which carried him and Ellen on two unforgettable cross-country journeys to Alaska. Although he loved his road trips, he did not need to travel far in his Barracuda to find joy. Perhaps his favorite pastime was going to classic car shows and crusin' nights with his grandkids.
A friend to all, Philip was known for his friendly demeanor, funny sense of humor, and caring outlook. He always had a smile on his face. He had a special place in his heart for his dogs and could never resist the simple pleasures of chocolate chip ice cream and Milk Duds!
As we remember Philip, we are reminded of the words of Helen Keller: "Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all." Philip lived by this creed, embracing each day as an opportunity for discovery and joy. His legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him, as they strive to live life with the same passion, care and enthusiasm that he exemplified.
Philip's family will honor his life with a Service at First Presbyterian Church in
Mahopac, NY at 11:00 a.m. on March 1, 2025.
Following the service, Philip Terry will be escorted to his final resting place alongside his beloved wife, Ellen Marie, at Ballard Barrett Cemetery in
