Ray Hughey Obituary

Ray Hughey, age 89, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, with his family by his side.

Ray was born on March 28, 1936, to Harris Weldon Hughey and Lois Lisman Hughey in Palmer, Texas, where he grew up working in J. W. Hughey’s grocery store. Working alongside his family brought him immense joy. He was the second of three children.

Ray enjoyed running track and playing football in high school. He graduated from Ennis High School in 1954. Soon after, he enlisted in the United States Army. After serving, he returned to Fort Worth and graduated from TCU with a degree in Business.

In 1966, he met his beloved wife, Cynthia Bell Hughey. She brought to the marriage two boys, James O. Bell (deceased) and Larry A. Bell (deceased). Ray brought two boys of his own, Harris Hughey and Martin Wallace Hughey (deceased). In 1969, their daughter Anne was born, completing “yours, mine, and ours”. Ray and Cynthia spent many happy years operating The Candlelite Drive In restaurant in Fort Worth. Cynthia passed away in 1988 after a long illness.

Ray found love again in 2004 when he married Kay Fisher of Ennis, Texas. This marriage brought three very special daughters into his life: Libby Pleiner, Tish Wickliffe, and Linda Barnes, along with their families. Ray was showered with love. He and Kay enjoyed many happy years of retirement together, spending time with family, visiting the casino, and enjoying each other’s company. Kay passed away in 2015.

Faith was central to Ray’s life. He was a longtime member of Arborlawn United Methodist Church, where he served in many volunteer roles over the years.

Ray is survived by his son, Harris R. Hughey and wife Cheryl; his daughter, Anne Hughey Boudreaux and husband Bart; grandchildren Garrett (Elena) Hughey, Connor (Meghan) Hughey, Rebecca (Boudreaux) Lancaster (Clint), Rachel (Boudreaux) Walterscheid (Chris), and Brant Hughey; several great-grandchildren; his brother, Wallace Hughey and wife Rosemary; his loving friend, Joan Gallas; and many special relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Cynthia Hughey and his wife Kay Hughey; his sister, Sue Hughey Peace; his sons, Martin Hughey, James Bell, and Larry Bell.

The family wishes to extend a very special thank you to the staff at Stevenson Oaks and to Jaquetta Jones for the exceptional care and compassion shown to Ray in his last years.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. with a Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 4, 2025 in the J.E. Keever Mortuary (Palmer Chapel), 200 West Jefferson Street, Palmer, Texas 75152. Private Interment in the Palmer Cemetery.
