Richard H. Langworthy

On July 3, 2025, Richard (Dick) Harold Langworthy died of slowly declining health. Richard was born on February 24, 1939 in Watertown, NY as the son of Harold and Carolyn (née Peach) Langworthy. His early years were spent in Adams Center, NY and various farms in New Jersey before moving to Lyme, CT for school. He graduated from Old Lyme High School and the University of New Hampshire (Class of ’60) where he majored in Mathematics. He was a member of the Sigma Beta Fraternity.

After college, he worked briefly for Kenyon Labs in Lyme and enlisted and served in the National Guard and the Army Reserves. He joined Raytheon Co. in 1961 and worked there for 40 years. He began as a software engineer and rose to become a program manager for the Hawk Missile System managing the software for the first computerization of that system.

It was at Raytheon that he met his wife and life companion Barbara M (née Smith) Langworthy. They were married almost 60 years. They resided and raised their children in Chelmsford, MA before retiring to Franconia, NH.

Dick loved to travel and Raytheon sent him all over the world. He never tired of it and would come home from an around the world trip to begin a week’s long drive cross country. At UNH Dick joined the outing club and helped construct the Franky cabin in Franconia Notch. He loved the outdoors, particularly skiing, and loved his annual trips to the western mountains or the Alps.

Dick was an “adrenalin junky” and a self-described Hedonist, who loved living life to the fullest. This meant skiing as much as was humanly possible, and being up for the first Tram at Cannon as often as possible. In his younger days- skiing, hiking, rock climbing and white-water canoeing. Later in life- enjoying good food and wine with friends and (until the last few years) STILL skiing as often and as fast as possible.

When he retired, he became active on the founding board of the Boys & Girls Club of the North Country, helping on many projects. He also taught adaptive skiing at Bretton Woods. He volunteered for a time with Habitat for Humanity and received his Gold Hammer. He served as President of the Forest Hill Homeowner’s Assoc. He was quick to welcome his daughter-in-law into the family, always enjoying the hugs from children and grandchildren. He was a proud and happy grandfather.

He is pre-deceased by his son John, his grandson Artek, his brother William, and his sister Betty Gilbert. He is survived by wife Barbara, son Paul and his wife Joanna (née Dybciak), granddaughter Nadia and grandson Valek of Merrimack, NH.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, July 18th from 6 – 8PM at Phaneuf Funeral Home in Littleton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 19th at 10:00AM at St. Rose of Lima Church in Littleton with Father Ryan Amazeen officiating. Burial will follow at the Elmwood Cemetery in Franconia, NH.
