Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ratterman Brothers Funeral Home - East Louisville on Jan. 23, 2025.
Robert Berry Trabue, born in Birmingham, Alabama, during the early years of World War II, lived a life rich in love, learning, and adventure.
Mr. Trabue attended Atherton High School and Woodbury Forest Boarding School in Virginia. He graduated from the University of Louisville but spent three of his happiest college years as a Wildcat and a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity at the University of Kentucky. He served two years of active duty in the U.S. Naval Reserve and was deployed during the Vietnam War to Marble Mountain (Da Nang, South Vietnam). Bob and his wife, Nancy, enjoyed one joyful year in Gulfport, Mississippi, where Nancy taught school, and Bob served on base. He was proud of his memberships in the Society of Colonial Wars, Civil War Round Table, First Families of Kentucky, and the Huguenot Society of America.
Bob's professional journey included a tenure with the L & N Railroad in Nashville, before he devoted 40 years to the commercial real estate business in
Louisville, KY, a profession he truly loved.
A dedicated father and husband, Bob took immense pride in attending his daughters' field hockey games and school events, rarely missing a single one. He and Nancy shared a love for dancing, laughing, and traveling, especially to Florida in the spring. Bob's love for Nancy was an example of what love should be. Until the day he died, he smiled every time she walked in the room.
Bob reveled in the personal and professional successes and adventures of his children and grandchildren. He valued good manners, politeness, and a kind word. He was an avid fan of Kentucky Wildcat football and the SEC. Bob's heart was always in New Orleans, a city that held a special magic for him. His aunts and uncles in New Orleans enriched his soul, and the stories he shared from his experiences there will be cherished by his children.
An excellent storyteller and a learned student of history and geography, Bob had a near photographic memory for dates, places, and events of the past. The true bedtime stories he told his daughters-of train rides, forts in the woods, and Mardi Gras-will forever be with them.
Robert Berry Trabue was preceded in death by his father, Stephen Fitz-James Trabue; his mother, Eleanor Makofsky Trabue, both of New Orleans, Louisiana; and his beloved oldest daughter, Nicole Juliette Trabue Bockhorst. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nancy Jane Spare Trabue; his daughters, Christian Haskins Trabue (Gerard Buono) and Caroline Trabue Low (Martin); his grandchildren, Grant Bockhorst, Clay Bockhorst, Gibson Low, Emory Low, Elise Low, Wynnie Low, and Isaac Buono; his sister, Judelle Trabue Lewis (Mike); his niece, Elizabeth Scherer Jefferson (Jonath); and his sister-in-law, Victoria Spare Schmitt.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 am Monday, February 3, 2025 at Highland Presbyterian Church, 1011 Cherokee Road. Rev. Nolan Huizenga will officiate. Burial will follow in Frankfort Cemetery, Frankfort, Ky.
