Dave was my TA at Berkeley in spring 1981 in a class taught by Kenneth Stampp. He was working on parts of his Masters and Lords book, and shared some articles with us. The comments here that he was "patient, kind and brilliant" pretty well describe what I experienced of him. I learned of his passing three years ago when I bought his book "At the Precipice." I was saddened to find out he had passed away. I did not know Dave's subsequent history, but appreciate what he did while he lived. Thank you 38 years later, Dr. Bowman. My father was a history professor. He died in March. I hope the two of you meet up in heaven.

I just did an internet search for this man and found that he had passed. I was a student of his in 1991. I always remembered him I had a terrible crush. He was the handsomest man in the world to me. Whenever I encountered him on campus he'd say hi to me like he knew me and I was always thrilled. All of this I am writing as a 45 year old with 2 kids, so forgive me for reliving that innocent time. I learned so much from him, he was brilliant and sensitive.

Words simply cannot express how devastating it is to learn of Dave's passing. I had the great pleasure of serving as the President / CEO of Planned Parenthood under the direction of Dave as Board Chair. Dave Bowman was a warm and kind soul. He truly cared about others. In my case, Dave believed in me, when I did not believe in myself. He encouraged me when I felt defeated. He brought laughter when I was sad. He was my friend when I felt alone. My life is forever changed because of his presence. He will be sorely missed!

Gosh ! How many great and stunning and rattling things are happening these days. I learned of an earthquake hitting the Washington, DC area (my home) in mid-summer, and now as we start the fall, this other "earthquake" hits ! Dave, I can remember some of the most plain, and yet wise, words ever spoken to me as we left your office and were crossing Speedway in the middle of the UT campus late one day "Don't ever live life looking back over your shoulder !" I was stumbling around on what to really make my major and how to proceed from that choice with my life and those were (are) a guiding star. Since then I have been bold, searched about, and found what I am meant to do by my talents, and am committing to that course unreservedly (though often I'm scared I won't have enough provisions to go the distance). Can I ask you a favor-- since you are up in the sky-- to occasionally throw down a strong wind to help me make up for too much time spent anchored in the harbor of academia ? Thanks. I promise you I will navigate the seas to my America. "Hook 'em, Cavs !" Ed Renauer

Like most, we find it difficult to capture Dr. Bowman in a few words, and it is with deep sadness that we write of him now. After years of working with him, it was apparent that his greatest pride lay in his role as a husband and father. We learned he is, of all the people we have ever known, the most intelligent, honest, fair, kind, and good. He had the ability to encourage, better, and help those around him. Dr. Bowman held himself to the highest of standards while maintaining a depricating sense of humor; he conducted himself with the grace and generous humility that enabled him to celebrate the unique and best in others. As previous posts have cited, he was the epitome of a scholar and a gentelman. More than anything, we recall the love and excitement he expressed in stories about his wife, children, and siblings. Our prayers are with all of them; we cannot imagine the magnitude of their loss. And, we pray for Dr. Bowman's peaceful rest. He was, and is, a true gift to the many lives he touched.

I was a History student of Dr. Bowman's from 1982-1984 at Hampden-Sydney College. He made a great impression on me and was a role model educator, gentleman and Christian. I have often thought of him over the years but did not know how to find him - and regret that I have missed the chance to tell him how much impact he had on me as a student and to this day. My deepest condolences to his wife and family.

I was very sad to come across Dave's obituary in the University of Virginia Magazine. Though I haven't seem him in almost 40 years, an enduring memory remains. I began UVA in the fall of '70 as an energetic kid from Memphis with a healthy ambivalence about a lot of things, including fraternities. However, when I walked through the door of Zeta Psi, I was blown away by the fourth-year men of the house. By any measure, they were the most impressive and interesting group of folks --men in this case -- that I'd ever been around. And Dave was the president. He was rock solid yet had a quite modesty about him, and his considerate manner was a welcome counterpoint to some of the things a lowly pledge would experience.
Reading all of the entries in this book, it sounds like Dave's considerable qualities and skills just got better over time. Of course this is how it should be for all of us, and Dave's life was a tremendous example. I never talked with him about Rilke but I suppose Dave never stopped "living the questions".
Sincerely,
J. Ritchie Smith, Jr. (UVA '74)

I learned of Dr. Bowman's passing online. I took his history 109 course in fall of 2005, and thoroughly enjoyed his presentation of the material. More importantly, my father was diagnosed with metastatic renal cell carcinoma during that semester, and Dr. Bowman was always available to help me through my own difficult time. My appreciation for his thoughts and suggestions during that time cannot be communicated here, but I do know that I came away from his course with the utmost respect for this wonderful person. He'll be missed here at UK for a long, long time. RIP Dr. Bowman.

learned of Dave's death via e-mail. That was the most shocking e-mail I have ever received. I was a graduate student of his for 11 years - almost his whole time at UT. The picture of Dave I have is one of hospitality and grace. He was so welcoming to his students and made great suggestions about my work and my progress. If it hadn't been for him supporting my overly long stay at UT, I don't think the dissertation would ever have been finished.
Dave's approach to students was gentle and kind, but he left his mark on each of them. Your loss is great, but plese know that Dave was a great example to his students both as a teacher and a human being. Thanks for sharing him with us. (This is a repost. I accidentally left my name off the original.)

Professor Bowman was my supervisor when I served as an academic adviser in the UT History Department. He mostly left Nancy Sutherland, Doug Sofer and me to our own devices but we loved it when he would step into the office for a visit, official or not. He had a sense of grace about him that was rare. He often had a real twinkle in his eye. I remember him as a person of true kindness and warmth and I am sad that I can't join together with everyone in Austin to remember him together.

I never had much of an opportunity to be alone with Dave, but I remember particularly one evening when he and Lee, Jan and I and maybe two other couples went to dinner with a hyper-adrenalized representative of some mission effort in Africa. This guy was utterly charming, but way over the top. I remember Dave's simultaneous look of shock, enjoyment and bemusement as this guy went on and on about his experiences. At one point, Dave looked across the table at me and we shared a grin.
Dave was such a pleasant, likable and comfortable person. It was my great loss not to have had more time with him.

As so many from the History Department prepare to gather in Dave's honor in Austin tomorrow, others of us scattered around the country will be there in spirit too. Dave was a wonderful mentor and model for us all, as a scholar and a gentleman. The teachers among us hope to inspire our students as Dave inspired us. His memory and example will stay with us always.

I have just learned of Dave's death. I feel such a sense of loss for all of us. Dave was my dissertation advisor at UT, and it was clear to all of us there, I think, that he was someone really special to know. He had a tremendous academic influence on me, but what comes to me when I think of him is his kindness. Dave was unflappably good-humored and supportive to all his students. He spurred us to achieve, but he also let us know that he would take as much time with us as we needed to get the job done. He was a generous teacher; judging from this guest book, he was generous to all he knew. I am so sorry that he is gone.

It was not until this week that I learned of the death of Dr. Bowman, and the news has brought me great sadness. To me he was the epitome of a gentleman scholar. He carried himself with such considerable kindness and professionalism that many graduate students, myself included, wished to benefit from his mentoring. My introduction to comparative history was through Dave, and I hope my own work honors the foundation he provided me in graduate school. I and so many of the students he helped to mould into budding scholars and teachers have Dave to thank for who we are today.

To Dave's family,
I just learned the news of Dave's death in an email from an old friend from my days as a student at UT-Austin. My friend's name in the "sender" line in the email brought a smile to my face as I sat in my office, but when I read why he had tracked me down-- to share the news of our mentor's death, I was shocked. And saddened. Dave was one of those special people you don't meet often in life; the kind who make a lasting impact on you.
I have so many memories of visiting with him in the basement of Garrison hall. It would have been a lonely place, except that his office was always a bustling center of activity because he worked with so many students. I truly don't think anyone was asked to serve on more orals and dissertation committees. Why? Because of his kind demeanor, his intellect, his genuine interest in really getting to know his students, his willingness to thoughtfully consider their interests and strengths and to work with them so that they were well prepared for their exams and proud of their work. I don't think anyone has been more influential on me as a teacher or mentor.
His love of his family was also a central part of who he was . . . .
He made a positive impact on countless people and he is missed.

Dear Lee, Kate and Will,
Our hearts ache for your loss. The void that has been left is too large for measure or words. Dave was an amazing man, a gentle giant, wonderful with kids, a serene soul with a listening ear and always willing to go the extra mile. A soft spoken, brilliant man. One of the many favorite memories ... his coaching of the Super Critters. We were blessed to have know him. Our continued thoughts and prayers are with you all.

For two years I had the pleasure of working as a TA in Dr. Bowman's HIST 108 at UK. Later he served on my dissertation committee. I respected his judgment. I admired the way he treated students with compassion while never relaxing his standards. Most of all, I consciously sought to emulate his style and methods. In short, he represented all that is right and noble in teaching. He will be missed but not forgotten.

Coach Bowman was my soccer coach at Hampden-Sydney. A kind man with great passion for the game. He devoted more of himself to our team than the school was willing to, as football was the focus of fall athletics. That alone was commendable, regardless of our record. I'm so sorry. Seeing Dave and Lee, thanks to the ice storm, was one of the highlights of my year.
I was talking to several people about Dave on Thanksgiving. They were talking about adult education at our church, and I told them, if they wanted to see how it ought to be done right, to look back at annual reports from the time when Dave was involved. The courses he taught, the people from the seminary he brought in, the courses he encouraged others to teach—no one else has approached that level of excellence. That's how I always thought of Dave: as someone who would bring to anything a level of sincerity, sensitivity, kindness, depth, understanding, thoroughness, and, often, brilliance, that no one else could match.
Dave and I grew up a few blocks apart in the West End, but I didn't get to know him until we were on the faculty together at the University of Texas. I will always cherish my memory of him, and profoundly regret his loss. My prayers are with all his family, his friends, and his students.

I had Dr. Bowman in HIS 108 my freshman year, first semester, and there is one memory I have of him i felt compelled to share. My brother passed away three years ago in November, and at the time, it was two years since he passed. I was traveling home to be with my family, and emailed Dr. Bowman to let him know I would be missing class that Monday. He replied asking me to bring something as proof of my absence, and when I returned to his class, and presented the funeral flyer I'll never forget what he told me. He first asked if there were a lot of tears, and I replied yes. Then he caught me off guard by saying were there a lot of smiles? I thought a second and said, yea I guess there were. He then replied, well its not about the tears but instead about the memories you keep alive. I'll never forget those words. He helped me very much through that tough time. I hope his words comfort you're family as well as you go through the loss of such a wonderful man. He truly was a magnificent teacher, and better yet an inspiration to his students. God bless.

Dear Lee, Kate, and Will,
Dave was a rare man whose gentle kindness imbued everything he did. The achievements he accomplished through his prodigious heart and mind brought honor to him throughout his life. I am not at all surprised Dave was a Seven at the University of Virginia, the single highest honor of the school. His smile, sincerity, and manners define him even now after decades of my not seeing him. I know God will support you through this time of sorrow at the loss of this great man. Lee, may you now accept some of the love and support returned to you from those whom you have helped so graciously through the trials of this life. I send to you and your family my deepest sympathy, prayers for your strength and peace, and greatest love.

I consider myself very fortunate to have worked as a Teaching Assistant for Dr. Bowman in UK’s History Department. Because of his height, he physically looked down on most of us grad students, but because of his gentle soul, he treated us as equals and looked at us eye to eye. I will truly miss our debates, his teasing, and his genuine concern for my welfare as a grad student.
My sincerest sympathies go to his family. He frequently spoke lovingly of you.

I was a graduate student in the History department and TA for Dr Bowman for three semesters. I learned so much from watching him teach and interact with his students - something it was clear he loved to do! But, more than that, he was an ardent supporter of graduate students. He treated everyone with respect and compassion, and it's because of him that I was able to find my niche. I will miss running into him on campus and around Lexington. He was an amazing mentor, advisor, and friend. His passing is truly a loss for all who knew him.

Dear Lee,
Dave and I shared adjoining offices at Hampden-Sydney College for five years. We swapped stories and happy thoughts on a daily basis and Dave approached me about his UT offer for my thoughts. Dave was one of the best teachers, of any subject, I saw in action on a regular basis. He was a humane mentor to his students and to his soccer team. Dave is still highly regarded and sorely missed at HSC. Please accept my sympathies at this your time of loss.

Our daughter was a student in Dr. Bowman's class this semester. She commented on many occasions how much she enjoyed his class. He was truly an inspiration to her and has made her experience at UK very positive. Our thoughts go out to the family and know that he touched people on many different levels. I never had the opportunity to meet him, but from all that I have heard, I know I would have been honored. As a teacher, I can only hope I touch the lives of students as much as he did.

Our hearts are crying and our souls are shaken!
We are blessed to have had Dave Bowman as our good friend, coach, teammate, and mentor. The Fadal family will miss Dave forever.
We are thinking of and praying for each of you.

To the family of Dr. Bowman,
I cannot begin to express the impact Dr. Bowman had upon my education. As a transfer student from Vassar College, I came to UK with a distinct hatred of history after my crude awakening to collegiate history at Vassar. As I was waiting for a friend to finish up an exam, I happened to overhear Dr. Bowman's lecture about WWII. To this day I have never heard of any professor who is more passionate about their subject. I had to take one of his classes.
I never thought I would ever enjoy history again until I heard Dr. Bowman teach. He is the reason why I will be following a minor in history. Dr. Bowman has rekindled my appreciation of history, and I can not be grateful enough for that gift. He was an intellectual and a great man. He will truly be missed.

Lee and family,
I remember Dave from our shared years at Hampden-Sydney. He was an inspired teacher with much creativity. For some years after he left for Texas, the admissions staff continued to use his picture in their material. They considered him the college teacher that the mothers (!) of prospective student would want to have. As I try to become the teacher I would like to be, I think often of Dave and the ways in which he negotiated the balance of career and family and how he respected the views of students while challenging them with integrity. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Lee, I was shocked this morning to learn of Dave's passing. Still so young! He is well remembered here at Hampden-Sydney as a wonderful teacher and great friend. We all hated to see him leave the college since he was the epitome of what a Hampden-Sydney faculty member should be. Most of us here lost touch with you and Dave over the years. This reminder of Dave's time here, while sad, brings back many good memories. Much love to you and your kids.

Although not my "official" mentor, Dave was my actual advisor and model in my first years as an assistant professor at UT. He was unerringly kind, thoughtful, and helpful - and often quite funny too. Dear Bowman Family,
I am so very sorry for your loss. I know that these words can not truly express the depth of feeling that many of us feel. I have worked with Dr. Bowman through American Legacies (Charleston Trip) and Democratic Visions. He always shared his passion for history and had a wonderful way of putting people at ease. Dear Mrs. Bowman,
I had the honor of meeting your husband last year as a member of the Democratic Visions grant. He was our focused historian last year. I loved listening to his teaching, you could hear the passion in his voice, you knew he loved what he did. Every time I use a map in my class I think of him. It has just stunned me to hear of his passing.

There are no words that can express the grief so many of us feel at the loss of Dave Bowman and no words of comfort that can still the sorrow his family feels. For 15 years, Dave was the moral compass of the Department of History at the University of Texas, a light to his students, and a friend to his colleagues. We missed him when he left for pastures literally greener in Kentucky. I know I speak for many others when I say that we miss him more now that he's departed for heavenly pastures.

Dave was one of my mentors in the doctoral program in history at the University of Texas in the 1980s. He encouraged and challenged me like no other teacher I ever had. Dave was a superb scholar and a wonderful role model as a historian and person. He never said a harsh word about anyone and always deflected praise and credit away from himself to others. He worked tirelessly for the UT History Dept. He cared so much about his family, his church, and his fellow man. What a terrible loss. Deepest condolences to his family and friends from Mike & Julibeth Parrish.

I was chair of the History Department at Berea College when Dave Bowman came to Kentucky. Seeking a job, he sent me his credentials, which were enormously impressive. Unfortunately, there were no jobs in history. But Dean John Bolin was seeking General Studies professors, and immediately hired Dave. Later, Dave was employed at the University of Kentucky. Dave was a great teacher and a great scholar. He was a kind, generous man, and I feel honored to have known him.
